A Friend Passes

Just yesterday a friend from the hunt club unexpectedly passed away. She was active and athletic, usually riding in the fastest group of the hunt, and rode in the most recent just a few days ago. All I've heard so far is that the day before yesterday she went to the emergency room because she was feeling bad, and was sent home after being told it was only the flu. The next morning her housemate found her already gone.

It was sudden and stunning and sad, and makes me think the ER docs missed something.

You may try sending her a handwritten letter (short note) to let her know that she is in her thoughts and that you are available for her whenever she is ready. I know that after my daughter passed, I was crazy with all of the support people tried to provide. It was a little overwhelming, then and even now, and it's been 13 years. Maybe after things settle, or when she has one of those low moments, she might give her some peace to see you note letting her know that you are there for her. That may be enough to get her back to center, so to speak. You may want to drop by and sit with her for a few moments, just so she will have someone to vent to. It's tough, as we all know. It's just as difficult to be in your shoes, but sometimes it only takes something simple to be a true friend.

Amy, how lovely. I'm reminded of something I wrote to a friend just this week: I used the term Ã¢ÂÂgood deathÃ¢ÂÂ in conversation once, and the friend I was talking to looked appalled. But since none of us can hope for no death (and many would say thatÃ¢ÂÂs a good thing), the best we can hope for is a good one.......peaceful and in accordance with our wishes. When my husband lay dying in a nursing home, I brought his favorite CDs (Shostakovich's 5th Symphony and Brahms' German Requiem) and played them to the end. I'm sure your friends appreciate what you did more than they can say.

Secretary showed me one that had been placed in remembrance of someone else. Was gold with black lettering. I couldn't have been more pleased. Just what I wanted, a lasting memory.

Always hard to lose a friend -- and sudden death is a shock. Maybe the ER misssed something, and maybe not. Maybe 'the flu' can kill you.

My deepest sympathy for you and the family. She may have waited too long before going to the ER. The flu can definitely kill. The mistake the ER made was not admitting her. These days you just about have to have no pulse for them to admit you. Very sorry, very sad situation.

I too,am so very sorry for the loss of your friend,Bob.

I had a close friend pass away beginning of Feb. with the exact same story-went to hospital,she hadn't felt "well" for about a week-died day after being at hospital.

Thank you all for your kind words. I still haven't heard more about what specifically happened, I'm not sure they know yet. I know her beloved dogs and horses are being cared for while things are being figured out. My wife, who was out of town all weekend, reminded me that our friend had been having some "heart issues" over the last year, so maybe the flu wasn't a factor, or maybe she didn't have the flu at all, and it was misdiagnosed, or maybe it was a combination between the flu and the "heart issues"

That's so tragic and maybe could have been avoided, it's horrific to get the news a friend died but this one makes you feel even worse. My condolences.
