what kind of detectors do you have? Are they wired or battery?

I'm alittle nervous about carbon monoxide

Have gas heat, gas water heaters, gas cooktop, and two sets of gas logs. We have a smoke detector in the kitcehn that I believe is wired into the security system and battery ones in the other areas. The only CO monitor we have is one we bought and plugged into an outlet. It has never gone off. Never had an issue.

Your best protection is adequate ventilation and using it. You can also have your equipment inspected periodically to make sure it is clean and you avoid developing problems.

We had a CO alarm a few years ago. Afterwards firemen suggested we get plug in with battery backup that display the actual CO ppm. We got Kiddie Nighthawk in addition to current ppm you can check highest number in last 24 hours. It is reassuring after our alarm. And if I had known the extent of our exposure at that time it would have been less frightening. We all had to have blood test.

You may not have to move the line at all. A foot away is nothing, and sometimes it is better than if it was right behind the range, because the end of the pipe might hit the range. Here's how it goes. If you can see the end of the pipe, there is probably a cap on it. There may also be a small red lever called a 'shut off valve'.. It's not the main shut off, just a small one for the range. If it's not there, you should add one. A plumber or someone can add this shut off valve in two minutes if it doesn't interfere with walls or cabinets. Otherwise they may have to extend the pipe either under the floor or in the wall. And yes, that is a bigger job Basically, the gas is shut off,(A clever plumber who has everything ready to go may not even bother to turn the gas off if the pipe doesn't have to be moved) ... the cap on the gas pipe in your kitchen is removed, and the shut off valve screwed on with teflon pipe putty. Now you don't need the cap, you just turn the valve to 'off' (this is always perpendicular to the gas pipe). And the gas can be turned back on -assuming it was turned off to install the appliance shut off valve. Now you're ready to go, simple install a gas flex hose from the small appliance shut off valve to the back of the gas range. These flex lines are usually about 2 feet long- but often longer. Once the flex line is installed,(usually running under the range, or between the legs of the range and then up the back to the connection on the range) you turn the small shut off valve 'on' and you're ready to cook. Now, the only tricky part is knowing where the gas connection is on the back of the range. Every manufacturer puts it in a different spot, but usually it's fairly low on the back. So, yes, you may have to add some gas pipe, or an elbow, because you don't want the gas pipe or the flex line to hit the range. Usually the gas pipe should be close to the floor and between the legs of the range,(either in the floor or low on the wall) or off to the side a bit if there is no interference with cabinets and doesn't show. The plumber will need to know this before doing any work, or you should have the range nearby for them to look at. Oh, and you're going to need an electric outlet nearby as well. This should also be close to the floor so the plug won't hit the back of the range, or again- slightly off to the side if there's not interference and doesn't look bad.

Yeah, a wall thermostat can cycle it on/off just like your furnace. Also, wireless remotes are available too. I think the style of some stove lends itself very well to the rustic look. Some stonework behind it would look great. You may want to visit a fireplace shop to see many stoves or fireplaces in operation. That helped me make my decision. Also, when choosing a spot for your stove or fp, keep in mind the exhaust vent can't be near any windows, doors or intake vents. There are specific code requirements. Use a metal weld compound like JB weld applied in layers until you build up the corner. or if possible make a tiny frame out of chicken wire, and fabric mesh to replicate the shape of the corner and then apply the JB weld in layers on that frame until it is sturdy and hard. You could sand it after to make it smooth and attractive.... and paint it.

I am with you....in our first house we had a wood burning stove very much like the one in your picture. It heated our whole house. We had access to free firewood so we had free heat all winter long. Was also very nice when we were without electric from a winter storm. I also cooked on it some. Now we have a gas fireplace in this house and it is nice, I guess. We do miss the wood stove but not the dirt :)

CO detector plugged into an outlet a few feet away. It went off once, when we were cutting an opening in sheetrock beside it--I assume because there was a certain concentration of particulate matter in the air. It didn't occur to me to remove it first.

We also have the same type of propane detector, plugged into an outlet closer to where the gas line enters the house, and closer to a second gas fireplace, the older of the two.

Several smoke detectors on each floor, but battery operated kind.

I have an Italian stove and because it has to conform to European safety standards, it is safer than an American stove. Furnace is in the attic, and I have not worried about it - gas water heater is outside, as required by California law (It is never cold outside here anyway), and so no danger from CO from that. I think garages are the most dangerous places, and we do not park inside ours.

No CO detectors, but we have hard-wired smoke detectors in the bedrooms. I had to remove the one in the kitchen because it went off at the drop of a hat, and sometimes I have to close the bedroom doors when I am cooking, especially on the griddle. We do a lot of cooking outdoors, fortunately.

Hard-wired CO2 and smoke detectors - gas logs, gas heat, gas range top, gas online generator for when the power goes out.

Since I was renovating my 1939 house, building code required updating the detectors, too.

Yes, they do work! When a certain subcontractor decided to use his gas-powered blower to clear out the basement, it set off the CO2 detectors!

We just had our carbon monoxide detector (plug in) start chirping. DH wrote the date on it when we got it and just as the manual said it lasted 7 years. We just got two new ones, also plug ins, one for the main level and one for upstairs. He just ordered the same brand online, Kidde, but these detect both carbon monoxide and gas. They were about $40 each. Our smoke detectors are hard wired.

Gas heat (radiant in ceilings), gas log fireplace. I think there are 4 CO detectors (this is a long stretched out single level). Only one is hard wired. Additional smoke alarms.

When I sold my mothers house for her right before the end of the year, I had to add a CO detector per the inspection. She had an electric furnace, all electric kitchen. Later someone from the fire department explained to me....attached garage was the reason.

Curious how old your homes are --- CO monitors weren't a thing when this house was built. Sold my dad's home almost 4 years ago and didn't have to add anything and as far as I know, it only had smoke detectors.

The home I updated and sold for my mother was built in 1977. There was some deferred maintenance to tackle and since neither my brother or I had lived there to know just what we were selling (mother moved to a senior apartment), we had it inspected. With the list of things that would need to be corrected for possible FHA or VA financing, CO detector was included.

26 states require carbon monoxide detectors in private dwellings via state statute: Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia (via adoption of the International Residential Code), Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Certain states limit the installation to buildings with fossil-fuel burning devises, others only require the devise be installed upon sale of the property or unit.

(listed, sold, closed in 8 weeks total, - it was VA financed buyer so I was happy to be prepared ;))
