Gas Stove for Fake Fireplace?
Comments (2)If you truly have a "fake fireplace" then you cannot use it to install ANYTHING including gas logs or a gas insert. It would need to be torn out and you would have to install either a gas fireplace or a freestanding gas stove. Don't take it literally when it says "zero clearance". Everything needs some kind of clearance. You need to have a tech from a stove shop come out and take a look at the situation before you can even see what choices you may or may not have. I used a freestanding gas stove as the sole source of heat in my home and I loved it. Many people thought it was burning wood it looked so realistic....See MoreWant to install gas stove where gas space heater is
Comments (4)If I understand this you are not changing your central furnace only changing the heater (unshown) on the rt. What make, medel and BTU input is on this unit and what is the diameter of all of these pipes. What you have with the vents is called a common vent. I can tell you for sure that the clearances are not being met on your "stove" vent. B-vent has a 1" clearance and you are using single wall pipe. I believe you need to have a 6" to combustibles, but I do not have a cope of NFPA 54 handy and I'm kinda blanking on the single wall clearance. Confirm the clearance before moving ahead with anything. I suspect that your Stove is in the 60-65% efficiency range. Can you afford to run that at that low a number? What I have used in basements is a Rinnai Energysaver. You can get vent extensions that go up the wall and out in a direct vent. 82% efficient. I found that when I heated the basement for a period of time I definitely changes the comfort characteristic of the first floor due to the warming of the floor. If you did this you would abandon the vent before the water heater and remove the tee fitting on top of the water heater and put in a 90 there....See Morewood burning fireplace or stove or gas?
Comments (3)"For atmosphere you can’t beat an open fireplace..." That's true. I have a relative who just moved from a home with a wonderful real fireplace to another one with good fireplace as well. It threw out tons of heat; I had to move back. But yeah, Most heat is lost up the flue. Aside from stand alone wood stoves, there are also built in fireplaces that are just oversized glass door wood stoves that are almost as efficient. either of these 'glass door stoves' would require insulated flue pipe that IS expensive; the 'stoves' ain't cheap either. The flames in these stoves aren't natural and the viewing area is smaller than a classic fireplace, but the unusual flame shapes are still attractive and while less efficient, the doors may usually be left partially open to hear fire crackling etc while observation is in progress....See MorePrepping historic fireplace for gas stove
Comments (3)@HU-867564120 I am defnintely going for a more finished look. I am trying to figure out if I can DIY parts. Labor around here for any of the trades is super scarce right now. @Sigrid I bought the house in April 2018 and in had a chimney inspection in addition to the home and pest inspections. There are actually 2 chimneys. One that must have been for the kitchen in addition to this one in the dining room or parlor. The chimney cap on this one was working as needed. The chimney cap for the other one was repalaced as it was leaking a little. Both chimenys were passed wihout concerns for structural issues. I have had the local chimney pro out to inspect. He is not concerned about the safety of the installation at all. It is more the looks part. I started taking down some of the "Carnegie" bricks that were the fire wall. What I am finding behind them is appearently a hodge podge of other brick and mortar. The mortar is all turnign to dust. Heat is not the issue for the gas stove with the proper clearances. I am just trying to figure out how to smooth it out. Most of the videos I have found have been about stucco to fireplace surround. Or creative uses for a no longer used fireplace, but not much about simply cleaing the brick up. Found one UK video where they put split slate on the floor of the fireplace to level it out....See Morejasper60103
