tomatoes and sharing a square (of a sq ft garden)...can it be done?

We've got extremely (extremely) limited garden space. Currently taking up the "tomato" garden space between now and the end of May are cabbages, buttercrunch lettuces, and arugula, all in various stages of growth --some of the lettuce can first be harvested in about two weeks, the first cabbages at the end of March..... The twenty tomato plants I started from seed back in December are just about ready to transplant out and will need to be transplanted out SOON if we want tomatoes before the fall.

The problem is that the squares they will go in are currently growing the darlings above. Has anyone had success putting their tomato transplants into squares that are harbouring lettuce, cabbage etc in various stages of growth? Can it be done successfully?
