Thank you for the reply. I thought I would have to plant on the fence to get the cascading I wanted. Still trying to decide on what I want to plant. I love honeysuckle but I'm not sure if I want more color. I have more research to do. Lol

One thing people never think about when they plant containers is that over time the plant in the container is going to become larger and heavier. Is your fence up to supporting weight at the top? Or, will it be pulled out of plumb over time by that weight?

The type of pot is important to overwintering as well. Plastic/or fiberglass is light weight, and would make more sense for hanging on a fence, but clay or hypertufa containers protect plant roots better from freezing weather.

I advise you to use annuals or herbaceous perennials for now. The roses are a good choice for the elevated position, as it would give good air flow, but you are likely to have both weight and winter damage issues as I noted above. I've had good spreading growth and bloom from Wave petunias. Spreading perennials most often mentioned are Aubrietta (Rock Cress), Phlox subulata (Creeping Phlox), Iberis sempervirens (Candy Tuft), and Aurinia saxatalis (Basket-of-Gold).

If you insist on plants with year-round interest, choose those with hardiness two zones colder than where you live; i.e. if you are in zone 7 choose plants hardy at least to zone 5.

It's classified as a miniature rose because of the tiny leaves & flowers, but the plant itself grows like Jack's beanstalk, it's gorgeous, & it's often evergreen.

forgot to say, heck, no don't put any pots on your fence!

Plant stuff in the earth, let it spread its roots & be more protected from extremes of temperature & from drying out.

Pots are notoriously hard to keep hydrated, especially in Texas.

I always feel a bit envious when I see photos of white roses cascading over an old stone wall, but that kind of thing requires a spot with a high area, a stone wall, & a low area.

& you can get the cascading effect by planting in the ground & training the tendrils onto the fence.

For the first year or so, you might plant morning glories in that corner & train them on trellises or chicken wire, just to have some instant gratification & to get the hang of installing structures & twining vines along them.

I didn't read the other ideas above. Climbing roses, and if you wanted an arbor wisteria is wonderful. I have seen wisteria draped over fences, and over the top of a lattice arbor and it is so easy to train it up a trellis. Oh I know of another plant as I had to rip it out of my yard. Loofah oh my gosh it climbed and wrapped up in my yard. I had no idea, it grew fast. I ripped it out. If you want seeds I will gladly send you the rest. Also Chinese Lantern trails very well.

I've never planted any kind of seed. This is only my second year gardening. I put in a small butterfly garden last year. A lot of trial and error....a whole lot!! I've learned a lot considering I didn't know an annual from a perennial last spring. I've seen pictures of wisteria. So beautiful.

Before and after. I pulled everything!! Don't have a pic of whole front yard at the moment but it looks 100% better. I'm still wanting to plant a few more but for now want to start on a new back yard garden.

I can tell you my hints to starting from seed. I tried to look up the zone you live in? The above photo looks wonderful. I have a burterfly - hummingbird garden. I will take photos when it blooms out a little more.

You can have them all; just pull out that water-guzzling, nutrient-sucking, high-maintenance grass, & plant everything else.

Passion vine/passion flower/passiflora is a great butterfly plant, & every year it covers the wrought iron arch over my neighbor's gate & spreads along his front fence.

sylviatexas1, Galveston has an average yearly rainfall of 44 inches with no regular dry season. Lawns are not a problem; it is the type of grass used that causes a problem. The St. Augustine that requires regular summer watering in Central Texas does fine on the coast where it is commercially grown for shipment to other areas.

I have a very similar corner bed. The backdrop is my most favorite vine, evergreen wisteria. Here in Dallas, it is rarely evergreen (although it is this year!) But where you are it definitely will be. You'll have to make sure your fence is sturdy because it will eventually get big. Then attach lattice to the fence. (Easy, cheap, and pretty.) and plant it in the ground in the back of the corner. Don't plant full sun bulbs right under it (take it from me) because eventually that will be shade. Full sun annuals are find for the first couple of years though. But out toward the front edge can be full sun.
