my wand is rusting, i am such an idiot!
Comments (119)LOL! Come on, be ornery! Once I found the little froggie, I realized that your pic wasn't THAT blurry, FTM. It was my sense of size (things may appear larger than they are) that had me thinking the leaf-with-eyes was the mack daddy frog. :D It's great to hear they love crickets, since I moved some pots the other day, and found a multitude of them, large and small. The frogs have been singing their hearts out all over the yard, and I know they come up to where the crickets were, since that's where my watering can is. :D I love yummy tummies! Comments (69)The ones who are "cringing" at polluting the earth with pesticides......you must be from California. I promise you the earth will not fall off its axis nor will it cause you another quake if you take the ants out with a chemical. You allow the government to pollute millions with a flu vaccine that contains harmful ingredients. You probably are first in line to get it. Your government produces radioactive materials and your worried about a chemical killing an aggravating pest. Your oceans are polluted with gas, oil, fecal matter dumped from heads on boats. Yet dont spray a chemical for ants? I'm so sick of tree hugger mentality. Show me action instead of reaction "words" to problems. How about you get out and plant trees to replenish what loggers have cut to build your table, couch, chair, doors, and house. Tell the gov to stop polluting your earth. OR ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THIS IS LIFE.we are the top of the food chain as long as we use materials that God gave us the intelligence to produce. I will never support your beliefs as long as you are the type of people who tell others ...you can't put a barrel to catch rainwater coming off your roof to be used as you wish! GOD MADE THAT WATER! I understand that aquifers need to be replenished. But does the rainwater caught by the few actually hurt the water supply? It's a 55 gallon barrel. And it doesn't catch 1/3 of that after a rain. So spray for your ants, put out granules to kill or run those pesky ants, termites, roaches, spiders,Grubbs, beetles, etc to your neighbors yards, who use natural deterrents(vinegar and water). Sorry I'm so harsh but by gosh sometimes you fight fire with fire. Death to ants...lol...See Moregroundhogs
Comments (67)Our ground problem started after I built a shed in back yard to store pool machinery/supplies. Sadly, the ground hogs love to live and build their tunnels under the shed, which affords them a good degree of security. I have tried more than 10 suggested methods of evicting them but NOTHING I tried had lasting results. Finally I tried trapping them, which works very easily, but what does one do with them? In NJ you can not legally transports one of these animals without risking a hefty fine. Besides, they are dirty and do not smell too nice, so it's not an easy ride to a new location if you should decide to risk the law stopping you. The ONLY way is to trap them and then shoot them with a good pellet gun, then drop them in a hole and cover them up. I buy the extra large traps available from Harbor Freight. A similar trap avialable at the local home center is at least twich as much. I bait them with an apple which works very well and is super fast. These traps will catch a ground hog in a time period of a few hours to a few days. Anything short of giving these critters a one way ticket out of your life has NEVER worked for me. I've tried dozens of methods and "fail safe stuff" available at the home centers with absolutely no results to speak of. You need to get serious and make them disappear!...See MoreSalvia oxyphora: an unusual sage
Comments (83)My one oxyphora did ok this year (my first year growing it). This photo was taken in mid October when it was blooming the best. It liked the cool late-season weather. It bloomed ok during summer, but intense heat caused young buds to die. Growth-wise, the plant grew more slowly and remained smaller than I expected. If I was going to keep it in that same spot, I'd plant two of them together to fill in the space better. However, I think that spot is too hot so the current plan for next year is to plant one oxyphora in a sunny, but less hot, spot about ten feet off the left edge of the photo and a second oxyphora in a shadier spot on the other side of the yard that gets only morning sun. It will be interesting to see which plant performs better. The two new locations are also easily viewable from the house so I'll finally be able to see if hummers here like oxyphora. The cuttings I took in late September and early October all rooted quickly. I have three of them growing in 4" pots inside. They grow like weeds, especially under the shoplight(two of them are now in the cool window to keep their growth in check). I've already had to cut a couple of them back.
