Aloe Starting to Bloom
Comments (18)Hi, folks!!! I see most of you guys are in California. I am in Philadelphia. Ok...I have only seen aloe blooming once here...and it was yellow like in the photo shown. That guy had his aloe for 15 years...and had gotten a million babies all over his house. He gave me two babies and I lost one and was about to lose the other but gave it "benevolent neglect" and it is doing fine. First question...how does one get the aloe to bloom??? Second question...I saw pics from S. Africa where there were many varieties of flowering aloe. What's with that?? How are conditions different??? Ok...let's see what help we can get on this!! Hope you guys are up for the challenge. Gardenbud, Faye...See MoreAloe in bloom
Comments (15)I'd like to second what Felix said about them attracting hummingbirds. They love aloe blossoms. I have a very big one like Felix's and it blooms off and on through October or November. They are visited by another small bird that I haven't been able to identify. The bird sticks its nose into the flowers. I'm not sure if it's eating the nectar or the insects. I witnessed an encounter between a male Ruby-throat and one of these little birds the other day. The little bird was eating away when the hummer buzzed it. It took off and the hummer came back and flew a U over it. The hummer then started feeding, but a few seconds later the little bird came back and claimed the aloe, chasing away the hummingbird....See MoreH. iguazanum clump in bloom video
Comments (11)I'm hoping I get lucky with this beautiful species. I was able to get some seeds from the PBS seed exchange a year ago and 6 out of 10 seeds sprouted and seem to be doing well. This past week I transplanted them from a community pot of vermiculite to more individual conditions. About the same time I was growing some H. cardoso moreira seeds that were sent from Hans in Denmark and they too were transplanted into the same container. Here they are all growing in a deep 15 cell tree seedling container. It's a little hard to see because it seems to be getting darker earlier :-((( but the six in the background are the H. iguazuanum and the fifteen in the foreground are the H. cardoso moreira. Time will tell if these little cuties survive and hopefully they will, since I have promised some to folks on this list. Warm Regards, Fred...See MoreSpiral Aloe in Bloom!!!
Comments (19)That old age thing worries me! My parent plant might be as old as 30 years. It was a decent size when I bought it. The good news is that I have finally found a site in my garden for the twins. I’d forgotten that we took out a Japanese maple earlier this year because it had outgrown its spot in my small garden as well as outwitted my best attempts to prune it aesthetically. It’s a perfect site with regular water and some afternoon shade. If the twins survive separation and moving they are young and I shouldn’t have to worry about losing them to old age. But I hope I don’t lose the parent either!...See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
