Comments (64)The title would be too long. okay...how about... The Cryptogam Forum is worded like this: TITLE: Moss, Ferns & Cryptogams DESCRIPTION UNDERNEATH TITLE: This forum is for the discussion of moss, ferns, and other cryptogams, including fern-allies, lichens, mushrooms, etc. Going off of that, we could use something like: TITLE: Heuchera and related plants Forum DESCRIPTION UNDERNEATH TITLE: This forum is for the discussion of Heuchera and related plants Heucherella and Tiarella. are we getting closer? lol I also vote and agree that Melissa's pic is perfect as it stands, no need for overtechnicality on what will be only a tiny corner pic. Melissa, I had wondered if that was from Terra Nova. I found this collage pic credited to Terra Nova as well, it just wasn't wallpaper sized. Thank you again for getting this off the ground, Scott. Comments (39)Wow back at you, Faye! You described Glenn to a T! BC described jovial - absolutely! So glad to have met him. That is part of what I meant by an enriching experience. Glenn is a pleasure to be around. A friend who reminds me of my brother a bit too. It's just natural to hug those fellas! Many, including me admire your lush gardens - it's nice to know where you shop! ;-) A wonderful testimonial for HC and your care for your hostas. Thank you, Faye....See MoreThe reddest heuchera?
Comments (18)Well, I can see that I am very late to the party, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth for future readers and researchers. I live in Central Arkansas and pride myself on being able to grow pretty much anything, BUT, and this is a big BUT,. I fell in love with Fire Alarm and just had to have it. I was so hopeful. I planted it and I don’t think it lived until the first fire truck arrived. LOL I don’t think I will try again, but I have been doing my research. I googled “the best Heuchera to grow”. There are many opinions out there, but they don’t vary that much. I would check out (in no certain order) Terra Nova Nurseries Proven Winners Birds and Blooms The Spruce Walters Gardens and I have not checked out Southern Living yet, but their suggestions would probably benefit only me. The next (and probably smartest) thing I’m going to do is visit all the nurseries near me and ask them which Heuchera they sell and which ones do best in my area. I think The Spruce is up in the northeast and what works for him may fail miserably for me down here in the south. good luck and happy gardening....See MoreSmall purple or burgundy substitute for heuchera ?
Comments (24)As luck would have it, I saw Penstemon Mystica sold as a “Starter Perennial” (very small pot) a few days ago. Foliage looks very much like Husker’s Red. So now I have a few inexpensive ones to try in this bed, and see if the foliage goes green and if it tolerates the shade, before I seek out a Penstemon with darker foliage. I bought a new plant bagged and bare-root, Astilbe Chocolate Kiss. Photo shows chocolate / purple leaves. I have not planted them yet, so it remains to be seen if they are what they purport to be and if they will perform. My research has turned up lots of Chocolate Shogun, but very little Chocolate Kiss. Unless anyone tells me otherwise, I’ll give them a try there too, as I have other astilbe there, though they don’t flourish. They have never achieved any kind of thickness or density; that’s true in all 3 beds where I have them. But the leaves are pretty there. Anyone have any knowledge of this plant? I looked up Serious Black that I bought last year. Seems like it is a clematis recta, too…? It was a bit confusing: I don’t know if it’s a larger group, all or many of which have dark foliage. I had never thought of purple Oxalis! A nursery I know of sells it as an annual, I believe. That’s worth a try to see if it will overwinter there. Thanks for suggesting these new options! As soon as I see where the later hosta will pop up, I’ll be planting the penstemon and the astilbe. As soon as they are up enough, I can ID and remember the heights and spread....See MoreHighland Blooms Dawn
