Is Google Doing Away With Picasa?

Has anyone else heard this? I heard something on this morning's news. I'm sure many of us have multitudes of Picasa pictures. Mine go back over ten years. Yes, saving them to online storage is something I intended to do.

Do you have suggestions/recommendations? Do you know how much time one has before Google drops Picasa? Is the story accurate? If I edit my Picasa pictures I can delete maybe a third. That still leaves lots and lots I want to hang on to. Thanks.

Google Killing Off Picasa to Focus on Google Photos

The Picasa desktop app will also be discontinued starting March 15th, 2016. The application will still work on your computer, but Google will not be supporting it and there will be no future updates to improve it.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this transition causes, but we want to assure you that we are doing this with the aim of providing the best photos experience possible,” Google says. “Google Photos is a new and smarter product, that offers a better platform for us to build amazing experiences and features for you in the future.”

Thanks very much, zep516. I felt really pressured to do something quickly when I heard it on the news. What you said has set my mind a little more at ease. Thanks to you I did read a little more about it on Google. I think it has given me the kick to move forward with my old intentions. Regards

Picasa isn't a destination... it doesn't store pictures. It just displays what it finds on your computer (i.e. in My Pictures, etc). So can you import them to your My pictures folder? Google the error----> AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO IMPORT. EITHER THE SOURCE IS UNAVAILABLE OR THE DESTINATION IS FULL OR READ ONLY.

Mikie, Two suggestions that aren't what you asked for but others might find useful: 1. Freeware PhotoFiltre from http://photofiltre.free.fr/ I used it to edit out imperfections in both of our daughter's wedding photos e.g. confetti right across the groom's eye in the best photo of the day! The freeware version does everything that I have ever needed. It is much easier to master than the big commercial programmes like PhotoShop etc. There is also a shareware version for about $40 (29 euros) with a free trial if you require even more features. It's at their other site: www.photofiltre.com 2. An excellent no nonsense alternative to Picasa: FastStone Viewer. It is fully featured including an editor etc. etc. and is free for home users from: www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm Here is a link that might be useful: Freeware PhotoFiltre

This is why I invested in and use (for the most part) a large separate drive. Nothing seems to last the long haul and then you loose your stuff if you don't have a Maddielee like we do and get the heads up. I keep everything from a back up of my laptop to all of our pics on the separate drive and up load what I liked to share to a photo storage spot for easier access. I would urge everyone who doesn't do that already to give it a try. The external drives aren't every expensive and are well worth having for those rainy days.

I have Picasa but for photo editing etc. I much prefer photoscape, I also have PB where I have over 600 photos and I save to online storage and just incase, and I save to a flash drive.

Here are a few links that explain it better - I am still unclear but it looks like they will move your Picasa photos into Google Photos - there is a link in this page where you can find your photos already in Google Photos:
