Comments (57)Well, I'm back .. for punishment or for info either way ... I never received any email updates on this thread so wasn't sure it was getting any attention or updates .. wow my surprise! Where to start .. well, we didn't hire a CG - which was a bit of a mistake in planning our back bathroom and car port area that was converted to a room - but nonetheless we're learning as we go, as many people do in their first reno. I'm not going to get into why this was converted into a room, we didn't do it, but the previous owners did. They had a leak issue in the room so we fixed it last year. This year we decided to take care of the room itself, and had no ideas what we wanted. We added radiant floor heating, raised the ceiling 2 ft (in the room not the bathroom because of joist limitations, ect), and had roughed in plumbing (without really thinking of a pre-fab shower pan or custom tile and custom glass - this was one of our costly mistakes). Not having a CG - or asking questions ahead of time - cost us. But we're happy with what we have. Now onto the work itself ... behind the walls are DensShield with latricrete HYDRO BAN and HYDRO BANî Sheet Membrane taped seams everywhere ... the grouting lines and tiles were vertical at the top because the house isn't square, and in fact neither are the walls. You'll notice in the picture the tiles get larger on the inside of the shower than they do on the outside. My tiler recommended the lay the tiles that way since the top row would then have a small piece which would be larger on one side than the other. A tapered subway tile Vs what you see now wouldn't have looked as good. So I took his advice. The shower pan he built as well and is in fact sloped 1.5" to the drain from where the glass will start (installation next week) - 2" actually to the inside of the drain. Anyway, we're happy with the job with what he had to work with, tile, colors, ect. The room was painted last night and once the toilet, sink and stacker washer/dryer are in, i'll re-post with the finished color and product - no matter how much criticism. Comments (12)1 - Just thoroughly clean them (first a non-oily soap and scrub them with those fiber scrub sponges, then mineral spirits and fine steel wool to remove any greasy residue) and use General finishes in any dark color. I have found that wiping on several thin coats with a soft cloth is easier to control than slathering it on and trying to wipe it off evenly. 2 - Consider glazing them with a pale stain to get a distressed "beachy" look. Minwax makes a nice light grey, or you can use diluted light grey paint. 3 - You could also paint them with any good interior paint - clean them well, sand them lightly and use a good primer, such as this "gripper" primer. Then paint with a good interior wood paint. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Glidden-Professional-1-gal-Gripper-White-Primer-Sealer-GPG-0000-01/100166028...See MoreRepose Gray is a lot darker than what I was expecting...help!
Comments (29)I’m a little late to this board, but we used Repose in our old house that we sold. We used It as a whole house color inside and it turned out very pretty. It does reflect a little different in each room bc of windows and lighting. That house was 1600 sq ft, the dining room was very small and it looked great in there, made the room look much larger. All of that said, we just finished painting our current dining room in Repose today. We covered red walls. The first coat I noticed a lot of green undertones, and the color looked much darker. We have the second coat on and it’s pretty, but I’m not feeling like it looks as grey as it did at the other house. Depending on where you stand in the room, it looks grey, greige, or more tannish looking, I don’t know if the mix was off a little or if it’s just the lighting of the room. It is north facing, which is apparently not the best place to put Repose. I’m going to see how it looks in a couple of days and may try another grey....See MoreCabinet Stain Darker Than Sample
Comments (10)Thanks for all your responses. At this point it is pretty much too late to do anything about it. The cabinets are installed and doors and trim stained to match. Anglophilia, thanks for your opinion. I have received a couple of other opinions that the darker stain is nicer. I agree that they are nice and they are well made but they are just not what we selected for our taste. I basically wanted to know from others if this level of variance is in any way normal. Of course the cabinet manufacture is falling back on their CYA statement that wood stain can vary from what you selected and it is normal. I claimed BS on that and said that under any circumstances there should not be that much difference from the provided door sample. We will need to consider other changes that may lighten up the area and again, in my opinion they are not hideous, just not close to what we ordered....See MoreBuehl
