prednisone?
Comments (17)Raven...I am on Prednisone right now, I have RA, and have been fine on Remicade until last Nov 1. I caught a head cold, which is a virus. It went to my lungs, had trouble breathing and I ended up in the hospital on Thanksgiving weekend. They did a CT scan of my lungs, and they were filled with inflammation and big spots. A lung Dr was puzzled, and he got together with my rheumatologist, and put me on a low dose of Prednisone, and scheduled a lung biopsy. The biopsy showed a lung disease called Sarcoidosis. It affects people with auto immmune diseases, and starts in the lungs. One thing, tho....one of the drugs that treats it is Remicade. My Rheumatologist said he had heard/ of another case like mine....and both lung DR and Rheumy started investigating, they put me on a relatively high dose of Prednisone....and in a week, I was feeling good, breathing good, etc. Never realized why people were so worried about me. I lost 30 lbs during all this. Information is, that the TNF inhibitor drugs (Remicade/Humera/Embrel) that are commonly used now, react the opposite in some people with an unidentified enzyme or protein - when they contract any virus. Instead of inhibiting TNF, they accelerate it...and thus the Sarcoidosis. The only way to diagnose it is through biopsy and full battery of tests. No way to identify who is at risk with these drugs. I am feeling great...next week's CT scan will tell us if the Prednisone is really working. Starting to step down from it....and, of course, the Remicade was stopped months ago when I first got that cold. My Dr is now thinking of Orencia for the RA(no TNF inhibition)...I can never take the TNF drugs again. Ask your DR to investigate....See MoreHow long can a dog be on prednisone?
Comments (27)I also have a 9 year old shihtzu and last weekend she had on sudden paralysis and she couldn't stand up and it took me a few hours to get a hold of a vet , I took her in last Saturday night and the vet said she has something wrong with her spine without doing any exrays , she just concluded that it was spinal and gave her a pain shot and ASPIRIN and another shot for nauseous, well on Sunday she wasn't any better and it appeared to me she was taking a seizure so I called the vet back and was instructed to bring her back in , they gave a shot Of neurontin in pill form and put her on prednisone 5 mg the neurontin is to be given ever 8 hours and the prednisone once a day , I gave her the neurontin for a few days till I seen she's sleeping to much to really be eating anything so I stopped the neurontin and continued giving her the prednisone which through prayers she's doing ok with and of the mornings she still shakes some and she still has a low energy drive , I'm totally suspecting this could be IVVD since that runs in shihtzus and the surgery to fix it is between 3000 and 5000 which isnt affordable , I'm suppose to reduce the prednisone tomorrow at half the dose which I'm totally leery about doing, I just wished they were certain about her spine since to exrays were taken i have been totally devastated over her since last week , she does seem to walk without limping now and she eats good and drinks good , I'm just worried about the prednisone issue 🙏😢💗...See MoreDoes anyone here, have
Comments (3)Ivamae, I was diagnosed with PM in June of 2005 after suffering for about 8 months with neck, arm, and shoulder pain that made me miserable all of the time. I did not feel that "stiffness" that is often mentioned as a symptom. Finally my family doctor sent me to a Rheumatologist who did the necessary testing to confirm what he suspected. I was put on 20mg Prednisone daily for 3 months. Then 15mg for about a month, then 10mg for some time. I was doing really well, so it was dropped to 5mgs. The results in relieving the pain in the beginning was almost instant. But at 5mg the pain returned, but not nearly as bad. The doctor then switched me to Cortef, a more natural form of corticosteriod. I started at 20mg. With it being roughly 1/2 the strength of Prednisone, I returned to almost pain free. I remained on it for a couple months and was doing well, so dropped the dose to 10mg for about a year and with the Dr's approval, dropped it to 5mg's daily, which I am still taking. When I saw the Dr 2 months ago, he said that he believes that I am free of the PM, but wants me to continue the 5mg of Cortef for the osteoarthritis that I have. He says it will do me less harm than taking an anti-inflammatory. The Prednisone in the beginning gave me a rounded face, fatty deposits around my neck and a pot belly that I never had before. The higher dosage seemed to make me jittery, overly emotional and just plain mean! The belly has not gone away, but my face and personality did return to normal within a few weeks after the dosage was down to 10 mgs. I don't think that P M was nearly as hard on me as it is for many. I had a mild case, I think. And I feel very lucky that the Doc thinks I am free of it...at least for now. He did say that sometimes it goes away, only to return with a vengance years later. I hope not! Anything else you want to know, just ask....See MoreAnyone had knee surgery for torn meniscus?
