You have two options:

• A 24" oven and microwave. 24" is the standard size for microwaves. Fagor, Miele, Gaggenau, Bosch, etc all carry 24" ovens. You will need to build up your cabinet a little to support the smaller size.
• A 27" oven with a 24" microwave. The 27" oven are going to be hard to find but Craigslist and EBay could be used. Kitchen aid, Miele, Gaggenau and Bosch made ovens in this size but stopped a few years ago. Parts are readily available for these.

I believe your measurements are a little off. I would double check with GE but I believe that older unit has the same rough 25" wide x 41 1/4" high cutout as current and older GE's.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think you're right that the cut-out is probably the same. My oven/microwave is wall-mounted, but it is not a flush mounting.

My concern is that the space available for the part of the oven that projects beyond the cut-out is a 26 inch width but not a true 27 inch width. My oven is in a caddy corner position. If you want I could send you a photo. No I don't live in New York.

Measure the width of the cabinet box. That's more important that your existing oven.

I think that the GE combined oven/microwave 27" unit will scrape the edge of the counters when I open the conventional oven (on the bottom). Do you think it would work for me to install a single conventional oven(JK3000DFBB
, 28.75" high) on the top, and then a microwave (PEM31DFBB, 12.125" high) on the bottom? I really do not want to have to re-do my whole kitchen for this. I could scout for parts on ebay, but they are all used, and it doesn't seem practical to get parts for a 28 year old appliance. Also, at showrooms here, there are no 27" ovens to look at; 30" seems to have become the norm.

27" ovens will mainly exist in the used market. What is the width the tape measure is displaying? Looking at your configuration, I would look at 24" ovens. Miele and Bosch would be my choice but I don't know your budget. I would get a combination oven and microwave for the top and a regular oven for the bottom. You can get a Sharp or Panasonic for the microwave oven combos. You would need a few filler strips for the space difference between 24" and your opening but that should be easy to create.

I would have suggested the fagor oven but it is a side opening door and that would not work for your configuration.

What is the depth, front to back measurement of the cabinet that the ovens are currently in? Also, do you have a budget in mind?

The depth of the cabinet appears to be 19". The interior dimensions of the oven are 19"W, 19"D, 16"H.

I don't have a budget and that's not the main criteria for a replacement. I would like a good, reliable oven and microwave that will last for a long time, is not prone to frequent repairs, and will have repair parts easily available. I do not want to have to re-do the entire kitchen and I would like to get the right width oven before they are obsolete. Also, I do not want a smaller usable oven size because I do a lot of cooking and baking (and I would have a problem with roasts).

I do not know the requirements for allowances and "buffer space" above, below, and on the sides of the oven and microwave, and also between them if I end up getting two models. BTW, I think I may have another 7" of space above the current microwave which can be used, but I am not sure. I am posting two photos.

Its hard to see for sure, but I guess they cut that space to spec, because it doesn't appear a 27" wide door would work today.

My though is like this.

Get a sharp 24" microwave drawer, make a box for it that will cover the space and support the weight of the oven.

You will need to run a 115V line to it. Be aware of this as the unit you have has 1 single 220V line that is likely 30A. That will be needed for the single oven.

Then place a 27" Single oven at counter top level so the door does not hit the counters. This should be the ideal setup as you will have an easy to use drawer at the bottom for microwave (they have been VERY reliable over time) and an oven at the top.

The 27" Bosch requires 26.75" across which looks more tha laballet has now.

My choice would be the Miele or Bosch 24". These units are bigger than your current oven. The only issue with either of these options is that they need about 22" in depth which you don't appear to have in the cabinet. I would also look at the electrical requirements to make sure you can run an oven and a speed cook or convection microwave at the same time.

We had this exact unit, I believe, and it died this year. We replaced with a JennAir unit that fit into the existing cabinet with only a slight modification.

homepro. You are correct, but my advice is to place the oven above the counter line so there is no interference with the door opening.

The oven they have there was a full depth unit. The wall must be opened behind it, because there is no way the oven is 19" deep on the outside.

KitchenAid or Whirlpool 27" combinations require 25 1/2" x 41" cabinet cutout. They are 23 1/4" deep. Overall 27" x 42 9/16". There is some vertical adjustment.

Joe Henderson, I like your idea about putting a microwave drawer in the lower position (below the level of the counter)--it's brilliant. The Sharp one you recommend seems a bit of a pain having to open and close the control panel each time you use it. Do you know of another one that might work? I check with e and apparently the cutout depth for my current unit is 23.5". Also, how much vertical space does there need to be between the microwave drawer and the oven above it?

I was referring to the interior sizes of the 24" ovens versus your current oven. In the specification for the Miele 24" oven, the interior space is about 2" smaller than the actual size of the exterior. I know this from the thickness of the side walls of my oven. If you current interior dimensions are 19"W, 19"D, 16"H; the Miele is trending to 21"W, 19"D and 20"H. There used to be an interior dimensions document but it is no longer on Miele's website. I wonder if the Miele Showrooms will have this information for you. You can always contact a Miele showroom and since they have the units on site, they can provide a measurement for you.

Sharp makes all the microwave drawers available on the market. They are rebranded as Wolf, Dacor, etc.

Sharp makes the more basic KB6524PS that would eliminate having to tilt that panel down. Also you can do a version from Bosch that's nice looking, but more money. Sharp does make them all.

As for vertical space, there isn't a ton needed. because the cabinet box will protect it. I have seen these installed very close under the wolf label without any issue. I would say no more than 1-2" which will cover up the platform that supports the weight of the oven.

Is it difficult to clean the inside of a microwave drawer, especially one that will be placed quite low?

The interiors are standard white painted steel. Easy to clean for the most part, but if something splatters the top of the cavity it can be tough to reach the top. I have clients that have told me they cover all of their food to prevent that if they can.
