Sick tree, please help.

The fruit was given to me last August from a tree in Cozumel, Mexico. I live in Aguascalientes, Mexico. It was very similar to the Pinkerton variety. First it grew very fast and looked healthy but then it's leaves started to look burnt. I read that the problem could be too much sun or a built up of salts, so I showered it and changed its location away from direct sun light but still in a very bright area. The problem continued so I sprayed it with Bayer home and garden.....it didn't work.

What kind of potting soil? Does your pot have drainage holes?

You need excellent drainage.

The pot has holes....and the medium is called mesquite soil, it is almost soulless, it basically dry leaves and wood chips. Could it be better if a plant it outside in the ground? Isnt it possible it is infested?

Trent: I'm not sure what your tree is but it's not a peach. Looks more like a plum or maybe even an apple. Maybe it's time to plant something that actually fruits. Or if you don't want fruit an ornamental. As to the disease it's fungal or bacterial. But since I'm not sure of the species I don't know what exactly.

From what I can tell, the type of tree seems to help more than anything else. Last year I had a Florda Belle that had a similar problem: I tried spraying with a dilute copper solution. It did not help - instead it caused the tree to defoliate completely. After much debating, I decided to replace the tree with a new variety. I went to a local nursery (Plant-o-gram) and talked to the owner about which type of peach he has the least problems with. He recommended a Tropic Sweet. It has been fantastic. I planted it last fall (and dug up the ailing Florda Belle & put it in a pot). Here is the Tropic Sweet around May: It is quite a bit bigger now and still very healthy. By comparison, the Florda Belle put out only 4 leaves this year and I chucked it around May. Sorry that isn't much help to you with your current tree, but thought I'd share my experience. use the PHOTO button below where you type ... and load them directly from your hard drive ... we need to know if this is a 100 foot willow... or a bush type ... but basically.. it sounds like the trunk is rotting from the inside out .... and it has to go ... on on site inspection by a certified arborist is highly recommended... and that is not any monkey with a chainsaw ... if its overhanging your house.. or anything of value.. you can probably just deal with the insured monkey with the chainsaw ... really.. really need a pic .. to be any more specific ... ken

Two very different possibilties: Likely root-bound and not able to properly take up any amount of applied water, note that soil has been pushed up to pot rim. Try re-potting in a larger container. If possible completely dunk the unpotted plant (if there are dry soil pockets) in a larger container (garbage can, etc.) up to the soil line before repotting, until all air bubbles cease the the roots and soil are very heavy. If possible, keep the pot largely in the shade. If, on the other hand, the watered plant is very heavy in its pot, and poking deeply in the soil reveals moisture, then the plant has been overwatered. Google potted+pomegranate+overwatering. If the deep poking encounters more roots than soil, then back to the larger pot advice. The proper watering/care of any large potted plant is an art.

That might be a scale in the bottom pic. See if it peels off easily. One won't kill it, but it won't help either. If your climate is agreeable, put it in the ground. Remember, you will have to graft it to make it fertile. Young avos are temperamental. Make sure the soil is dry before watering. Bark chips might retain too much moisture.

The most likely cause from those brown/rolled leaves is that the planting mix got too dry for too long. Everybody is afraid of root-rot with avos...but the truth is: if you have free draining soil (or potting mix)...the avocado tree needs constant moisture. They love water! PS Never plant in a container with native soil.

Thank you Tim and Fireduck. The weather has been cold, I'm going to wait a little to plant it outside....I have plenty of space. The plant is doing worse....

Those leaves are toast. No saving them.let them fall into the bucket for mulch.

I do see what looks like new growth.

if so, you still have a chance.
