Epazote is considered a weed by many! I have seen it growing abundantly in vacant lots in downtown Pittsburgh, so you should not have any difficulty starting it from seed. Your problem more likely will be controlling it! :-) Just keep picking the leaves & don't let it flower unless you want a whole patch of it (which perhaps you do).

Thanks. I know it's basically a weed...at least it grows wild. If I just knew what it looked like growing I could probably find it. Not sure I am educated enough thru Google Images. I live in rural area and surrounded by woodland. I probably have plenty of it...just don't know it well enough to recognize it. I'll be guided by your culture advice; sure don't want any more weeds. (I once purchased what was labeled a certain hosta at a nursery and it ended up being a "root beer plant." Ohmigoodness...I had hundreds of those suckers; thought I'd never get rid of all of them--it took years; the roots were invasive and like iron.

It is more of a field weed, not likely to be found in woods. Looking at pictures online to ID a plant is not generally a good idea, however ... Google "epazote" and hit the "images" option. Best of all, if you are able to visit a Tex-Mex type grocery store (seems like that would be fairly easy to find in E TX) they may very well have some in the produce section. You could look at it and, even better, smell it because then you will not mistake anything else for it. :-)

Full disclosure: I do NOT like the taste or smell of epazote (I did grow it once), but I am very fond of its close wild cousin, lambs' quarters and happily forage that to use just like spinach.

Since you are in a rural area, if I were you I'd find a likely meadow edge (that does not get sprayed with any poisons or get road dust), scatter the seeds there and allow the plant to naturalize. You'd never have to plant it again!

Thank you again SO MUCH. You've at least saved me from tromping around in all these woods! And I'll sow as you suggest. Maybe the deer will like it if we don't. Based on reading some "authentic" Mexican bean recipes, I'm determined to make a pot of Mexican black beans. It'll be my luck to hate it. Meanwhile, I'm going to talk to the chefs at some of the local Mexican restaurants. Maybe they have some and getting a taste will save my journey.
