Anyone use carpet tiles in their home?

I am considering using carpet tile squares in the lower level of a lake place. We need sound deadening in a living room/media room, but hate the thought of an errant dog ruining wall to wall carpet with mud or other stuff.

I hate to fully tile the floor just to have to put nearly a full sized rug on it to deaden noise. We'd be putting it on a slab floor.

My employer uses it in the building I work at and it seems to hold up really well and allows for replacement of squares when some idiot spills coffee, juice, or ink on it.

I think is would be fairly easy to install yourself. The lake place is outside the normal city radius install area and they charge $500+ more just to go out and install because of the distance.

Anyone use it? If so, what kind?

I installed carpet tile throughout our ranch/rambler house (except for the kitchen) back in 2005. Most of it is Mannington Commercial; the rest is Interface (the same company that makes FLOR). Both were installed using pressure-sensitive adhesive on a plywood subfloor.

Last year we installed a "house brand" of carpet tile in the basement, replacing broadloom that was lost to a drain-tile backup. This stuff is self-stick and has a much higher pile and thicker pad than the stuff upstairs. It was installed on concrete. I don't suspect this cheaper stuff will last nearly as long but it does not have to survive forever so it'll be fine.

It's too early to tell how the downstairs carpet will fare, but the carpet upstairs has worn like iron. Granted, many of those years it was just me living here. But this is the same stuff (brand and grade) they install in the big airport near here, and it lasts through 8 years of luggage carts, footfalls, spilled drinks/food, etc. before it has to be replaced, so I fully expect it will last about forever in this house.

It's not a bad DIY if one is somewhat meticulous. Have plenty of sharp blades handy and a couple of pairs of kneepads. The PS adhesive was spendy, but fortunately I used most of one bucket and didn't need any of a second. We have had occasion to pull up a couple of squares and scrub them of whatever landed on them; we have moved a couple around to equalize wear.

Honestly, my biggest disappointment with carpet tile ("modular carpet" in the biz) is that the manufacturers tout it as 100% recyclable -- which is is, technically speaking -- but it's very difficult to find anyplace in this metropolitan area of 2.5 million where it actually can be taken for recycling. Shipping it ... pretty heavy stuff. The scraps just sit in our basement waiting for that someday.

As we remodeled our house, room by room, I posted our carpet on freecycle and was overloaded with takers in no time. We made the deal that they had to pull it up and haul it out and take the pad too. No shortage of people who really needed it, and appreciated the upgrade it provided them. Everyone from hard luck stories to someone needing scraps for his garage. We've used carpet in our shop to pad metal racks. Freecycle it, definitely.

Anyone using commercial carpet for stairs?

We used commercial carpet as a bound rug in part of our kitchen when our larger dog was having a hard time with the slippery floor. Carpet was easier on him and the feel underfoot wasn't bad, per se. If you go with plush in the bedrooms and commercial on the stairs, I would upgrade the pad on the stairs to make it feel better underfoot. Plush carpet + good pad = commercial carpet + great pad, as far as foot-feel goes. In a different house we had PLAID commercial carpet in the family room (it came with the house) and I couldn't kill that carpet no matter how hard I tried. I'd run the vacc and it would look new again. I think it was a nylon carpet - it was the same kind they use in ballrooms in hotels. Might as well have been cast iron from how it wore ;) -Pam
