Front yard landscape design advice for unconventional home
Comments (5)This is a cute garden that I snapped a picture of the other day. Could I do something like this with the addition of some shrubs or other taller plantings as focal points? Although there are a lot of plants, it doesn't look too terribly hard. Lamb's ear, sedum, not sure what the variegated ground cover is. I should have added in my first post that I have a 3 y.o. and 1 y.o. and a large vegetable garden in the back, so I'd like the front to be relatively low maintenance. I am not opposed to covering the whole bed with shrubs and ground cover, then adding interest as the years go on....See MoreUnconventional kitchen gets its countertop
Comments (12)Wonderful stainless sink/countertop set up! I am very jealous. You've done a great job fitting everything into a small space. Plus the hutch really helps keep things from looking institutional. As to trash: my sister keeps an attractive crock (about 10'' high) on her countertop that she lines w/ grocery bags (or whatever other plastic she can reuse) and then empties it every day. I realize that your countertop space is at a premium, but if you can't find an undercounter solution, that might work. As to the hearth, are you referring to just the floor space in front of the fireplace or also to the area immediately surrounding the fireplace opening (in the pictures that area looks like it's not yet compete, but that could just be my monitor)? If it's just the floor, here are a couple of thoughts - I don't know where you are geographically, so YMMV. Bluestone or a slate to pick up the grey cabinet colors. (Bluestone always reads "grey" to me more than blue.) We have a bluestone hearth that has worked very well. Limestone in a color to coordinate with the stone around the fireplace. Tile. That might give you different color/finish options....See MoreQuestion about polyembryonic citrus
Comments (12)When a single citrus seed has multiple seedlings sprouting from it, more often than not, all of the seedlings are nucellar (genetic clones) of the fruit parent. However, sometimes one of those seedlings can be zygotic (the result of normal sexual recombination from pollination). The numbers vary with the fruit parent variety, somewhat. It is, in general, a very strong indicator of whether the seedlings will be nucellar, but it is not foolproof. Conversely, when a citrus seed has only one seedling sprouting from it, it is generally zygotic. However, this is not always true and again it can very much depend on the variety....See MoreVariegated citrus varieties questions
Comments (7)I am building a citrus collection and looking for some of the regular types of varieties, and some that are not often seen. I primarily like the variegated for their looks, and excited to see a pink lemon. These are part house plant and part outside plants so I'm not opposed to them staying small. If anyone knows where to buy one or where to get budwood please let me know. I'm always looking to add to my collection. I'm also working on making one tree with as many different varieties as I can get on it....See MoreDave in NoVA • N. Virginia • zone 7A
