Can You Prune Leaders From Pyramidal Arborvitae?

Hi all,
We have a large pyramidal arborvitae tree which grows at the corner of our deck. It has multiple leaders and has spread out quite far. The previous owners of our house planted the trees too close to the deck, and the leader on the inside of the tree facing the house is now growing against the deck railing. I was wondering if it would be possible to cut down the leader that is growing against the deck railing without killing the tree? If we can successfully do so, would we have a hideous looking bare spot on that side of the tree, or would needles eventually fill in from the branches of the other leaders? Here is a picture of the tree in question, albeit from the opposite side that would be trimmed.

.

Thank you for your help.
