Best Range Hood for 36' Capital?
Comments (9)I don't claim to be a hood expert either but in general, if you are doing a decent amount of stirfry, pan fry, or saute, then make sure you get a hood between 600-1200cfm. Just as important to the power of the blower is the capture area and volume of the hood. One can make up for the other but it's not ideal. If the install is not on an island or peninsula, then 600cfm with a 36-42" wide hood would work fine even if you saute frequently. On an island, there is no back wall or surrounding cabinets to contain the smoke so you should definitely consider getting a 42" hood with 900 or 1200 cfm. If you really don't saute or stirfry much, then 600cfm would do. I'd still get a 42" however. I had a cooktop on an peninsula and with a 42" 600cfm vent-a-hood, it was not sufficient for wok cooking. Comments (13)Thank you, thank you for all the wonderful feedback. I do want to stick with getting the grill and am going to do so. We probably will be cooking steaks outside most of the year (Jersey Shore), but in the dead of winter (especially like the last one) we would be cooking inside for 3 months or so. I want to grill vegetables, romaine, etc. inside. Two of you mention that you have the Wolf hood. Did you entertain the Best one? I have not priced the Wolf, but based on your comments will look into it. I had thought of Modernaire, Best and now Wolf. I do think I want to go a bit higher than the 1200cfm just because we have had such problems with setting off alarms. I will definitely try seeing how a 27" looks/feels - my hubby is 6'1" and because of his height we have had to scrap buying cute little converible :( so want to make sure he is okay with the height of the hoodt - he is the steak pro at our house! JScout - where do I look up more info regarding make up air. Would it only go on when the fan was on? Where should it be installed, how much, etc.... We keep finding and adding things in $$$$$! But, this is our dream house and we are so looking to doing it the way we want. Again, to all of you who took the time to write in - THANK YOU! Comments (6)It depends more on what you are going to be cooking. I assume if you are going to have the grill you intend to use it. That said then you need a very quiet and efficient hood that will draw off all of the HOGS....heat,odors,grease and steam. I have a Tradewind liner w/ baffles. I posted and noone looked at my post or at least didn't respond. It is 54" and 1400 cfm. It is extrememly quiet and I have never had to wipe any grease from surrounding areas since I started using it 2 years ago. If you do not get a quiet hood you will not want to use it. Also you will want baffles as they are quieter and also more efficient at gathering the grease. The other thing to look at is ease of cleaning. My entire unit takes 5 min one time a week to clean. The baffles go in the DW on Sunday night. We stirfry and use a grill pan on high heat and I have a built in deep fat fryer so I have put my hood to the test and it is perfect. You will also find that the hood does not need to be on High to be most efficient. There is a law of physics that applies and if you have too much suction you actually are counterproductive. Comments (23)I never really considered a steamer as an oven. Do people use them for baking? Do people who have double wall ovens not have a microwave either? Holly, you don't know me or how I cook or entertain. You seem to have a lot of issues with how I spend my money. You assumed that by having a slipper tub in my bathroom I would be increasing the cost of my bathroom by $5,000. Funny, it cost me nothing since the builder bought the tub and installation is part of that. I am not looking at a 48" range. I have a 36" range top with 2 very expensive drawers under it. My question was simply should I forgo the drawers, spend a small amount extra and get the LOOK I want of a full range rather than a CC rangetop. I am waiting for a new cabinet quote from another custom cabinetmaker. His costs are surely going to be lower, therefore the 2 drawers below the range top will not be so expensive and the option of swapping them for a range is going to be a moot point.
