Since many capital ranges are sold by Eurostoves and Mondern-aire is their "go to" hood, I'm not sure if Capital rebadges Modern-aire or has a different manufacturer. Perhaps someone who knows can weigh in on this so you get accurate information; many choices out there for hoods. Our setup is 42X30" 1200 CFM, wall mount (straight to outside wall, no ducting) Modern-aire over 36" Capital with grill. Am in a warm climate so we don't grill in that much, but the hood clears everything, grilling or otherwise. It's loud on highest setting.

I'm in TX and live in a townhouse so grilling in is the only way. I'm not worried about the noise, I've come to terms with that. What I want Is to remove as much smoke & grease as possible.

I really don't think the "brand" of hood makes any difference at all. You want it to be as tall, wide, and deep as you can tolerate with a 1200 CFM blower. Lighting that suits you and variable speed fan control are very nice to have. For the grill you want something that is at least 42" wide over a 36" top, 30" deep is good. The taller the hood is the better job it will do of collecting the smoke and grease, I'd look for 15-18" at least. The grill can generate a *lot* of smoke and grease to exhaust, you want to give it a big chimney. I think our hood is 42 x 30 x 24 and is mounted just above eye level. It has a 1200 cfm remote blower, 10" smooth wall pipe going about 6 ft up and then about 10 ft on a diagonal to the vent in the side wall of the attic (two 45 deg elbows). It barely keeps up with the grill with an adjacent open window providing unrestricted MUA. For most cooking it's fine on the lowest fan setting, which keeps things pretty quiet in the kitchen. I have to admit unless it's sleeting outside I don't use the CC grill for "real" grilling, but do use it a lot for veggies and such. Sorry now I didn't get the griddle instead.

Interesting. So I could go cheap as long as I'm getting (at least) 1200 CFM? I'm not opposed to mixing and matching brands, I already have Capital Rangetop and Bluestar Ovens... I had wondered if there was really a difference between blowers but in retrospect, there shouldn't be much since they really do one thing.

I will look at my setup based on what you mention specifically the chimney part. I have a cabinet above the range that the pipe goes through which may limit my aesthetic options. Thanks for the insight!

Cheap as in costing the least. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I've seen hoods with 1200 CFM blowers under $1k which have decent reviews. I'm an accountant by trade so outlets and ebay are always in scope!

Thanks for replying. I actually have room for 48" so I was going to go with a 48" hood. What size Capital did you have before you switched? Do you think it would have made a difference if the capital had been 12" wider? What do you have currently? What brands do you recommend for a 36" CC with grill? Thanks in advance for your input!

we had / have 2 x 48" capitals in the school. so we always go 6" wider ie 54". I think that a 48" over a 36" could look out of balance, depth is more inportant that width in my mind, but as always just my opinion. I only sell and use Modernaire hoods because I am 100% confident that no matter what shape or size i get i know it will do the job needed

I tried to find a dealer in TX but I could only find a distributor near Dallas. Based on what I've read the prices can fluctuate wildly between dealers/distributors. Oddly enough, individuals commenting about lower prices mentioned you a few times. Do you have any advice on how to go about getting a Modernaire hood to get an honest price?
