More Craigslist fun
Comments (127)I totally agree about the people who don't bother to clean the clutter off of whatever they are trying to sell Or how about the ones trying to sell a couch with the dog laying on it. I love my dog, but would definitely shoo him off if I wanted to take a picture. This one almost made me spit my coffee out this morning. Probably more than they paid for it in the 60's. Here is a link that might be useful: red plaid set...See MoreShow us your best Craigslist or eBay bargain?
Comments (82)I love many of the finds pictured here. I live in an economically depressed, rural area, and most of Craigslist is uninspiring and often unintentionally funny. Some people have big ideas about what their junk is worth! We've done well in the Farm & Garden section, however, both buying and selling. This summer I acquired a riding mower for $375 delivered. The owner is a mechanic (turned out he retired from the company my son works for), and the mower was well cared for. But mostly I came back here to thank My3dogs for starting this thread. As soon as I saw the title, I remembered that it had been awhile since I last checked Craigslist for a cedar wardrobe. My house is very old, and has almost no closets. I've been keeping my various jackets in an ancient but worthless wardrobe that is ready to fall apart, so I've been looking for a good replacement for about a year. Most of the ones listed had no bar for hanging clothes, and were overpriced anyway. So I saw your thread and went directly to Craigslist, where I found the perfect cedar wardrobe: just the right size, with a bar inside the top and a nice drawer on the bottom--for $75! The people even agreed to keep it for me until after Christmas, when my son can get it with his pickup. Thanks, and happy holidays to all!...See MoreNew craigslist chairs - should they stay or should they go?
Comments (23)Thanks for all the responses. You have given me a lot to mull over but alas, not a consensus! You all seem about as evenly split as my thinking has been! If it's any help, here's a pic of the new chairs with the pillows and throw from the other chairs. My pillow and throw selection is a bit lacking, but it might give you an idea. Not sure the throw and pillows help. I do think that the new chairs are a bit more sophisticated than my decorating style -- the New York City apartment is a great comparison (as I studied the pictures I posted, I was thinking they looked like something Emily Henderson would put in her Hollywood-rich-people makeovers.) My house is a farmhouse with wide-width pine floors and pretty much all the furniture is vintage/antique and kind of country/shabby/farmhouse in style. I'm just not sure the new chairs fit with the style. (But then again, maybe my style could use some shaking-up!) Also Ingrid - the coffee table is a chest brought back from China by a relative. It has odd Chinese paintings on it featuring little bald people with fishing poles. I hated it at first and had planned to paint the whole thing black but over time the paintings have grown on me. And though you can't tell in the picture, that exact shade of turquoise is in the rug. Really the rug has pretty much every shade in the room which I guess is handy for giving lots of choices for accessorizing -- and my accessorizing skills can clearly use all the help they can get!...See MoreKijiji/Craigslist is a pain
Comments (29)Something used is historically haggling. If you don't make it clear, and more than just the limp term "$X.xx firm.", then you invite haggling so don't get hyped up over it. Same for pick up only since many will meet somewhere means they're willing to drive so again, it's invited. Something used is at best 1/2 price. Plus the buyer assumes the risk that it's stolen or otherwise. When someone demands new or near-new price for something used I laugh at them. Around here Craigslist uses a remailer so the farming of email addresses is no longer an issue unless you give the address out, which I wouldn't. I will meet people nearby to keep them from going to my house for security reasons. Plus I never just give out my address. I will give them directions to the corner or a fake address that a GPS unit will get them to the corner (2000 This St. and postal code) then WHEN THEY GET THERE, I'll guide them the rest of the way. That filters nearly all of the fakes, flakes and no-shows. I also find out where they're located (general area) so I know how long it will take them to arrive then require they tell me when they leave so I know when to expect them. If they're 15 min late and don't contact me, they're not coming, no more time wasted and I don't leave home. That's a great idea for the deposit lucillle. And it's not as a joke, it's a good business practice. Craigslist has become far superior to newspapers for finding many things. I find lawn care, snow plowing/blowing and other things and it's much easier to find someone close-by. I get frustrated when people post ads to sell things then won't have the courtesy of saying when they're available or anything. Any business would post its hours If you only respond when you feel like it, I don't like dealing with you. You post an ad you should be maintaining that ad ongoing unless you say availability hours and days. That is why people ask if something is available. When they don't reply quickly, I move on. And if you are buying and selling frequently it's a good idea to buy one of the pens for checking bills. There's a lot of counterfeit in the US anyway. A couple dollars is well-spent, or if it's enough money to be concerned, I'll meet them at the bank, do the transaction inside and immediately change the bills (for example $100s to $20s or vice-versa) to something else, The bank then gets the risk, not me, and they're more likely to be able to tell counterfeit. When I sold a vehicle we met at City Hall whereupon we transferred the title so it was out of my name and unless they have a good memory they don't have record of my address. And it was a good thing I did that because a month or two later I got a letter from a county that there were unpaid parking tickets and my license was going to be revoked. Called them up and got surrrrrrrrre, you sold it. Sure. Can you PROVE it? I told him D@mn right! Gave the day of transfer and when he checked it out called back and sheepishly said "well, I guess you WERE telling me the truth...." I learned a long time ago to be cautious. It's hard to trust anyone anymore....See Morelkplatow
