Thanks for replying Trev. The soil is above the rim of the pot- but I did this because I have mel's mix in it, and it will settle quite a bit- after a couple of good waterings. About the size of the pot - I know that it may not work, but it's the largest one that I have. I don't see any possibililty of getting the thing transplanted anytime soon in the garden, because the cantaloupes and melons are really pressed for time- to get done before the first of September. I was mainly trying to buy myself some time with the plant. Could you clarify something for me Trev? I want to make sure that i'm understanding you right about the leaf nodes. Are you saying that if I set the container next to my garden- so that the vines run across the top of the soil, small roots will come out of each leaf node, and plant itself into the soil? If this is what you are saying, then I may be able to do that - as soon as the cucumbers are done producing. Do you think an area of soil that is 2ft wide and 4ft long would be enough for this to take place? Once it has reached the 4 ft mark, I could force it up the trellis that is 6 ft tall. Thanks Trev. Rain during warm periods are not a problem for plumerias or seedlings. They are used to on and off showers. Wet during cold periods are the problem. As long as your soil is quick draining, rain is good and especially for seedlings which require a bit more water as they have more extensive roots.

Hi Andi, I took out two 5' plumeria out of 15 gallon containers, by my self.. was hard to do. I got a large trash sack and put it on the lawn. Then started with a trowel spade taking out soil..getting as much out until I hit roots. Then I carefully layed the container on its side in the yard, held the plumie up the best I could not to break the branches, lucked out. PLant was dormant. .If you have someone to help you they can hold the plant from hitting the ground, while you take out soil. I just kept little by little taking out soil, until I got to the roots, pulled the plant out on the grass. (in my case was given plants in heavy mud, wanted to put them in good soil) One plant I washed off all the soil until I had bare roots. I trimmed some of the roots to clean white ones. Then to plant, filled up a lot of the container with perlite and cactus soil..until got to where the plant roots would set, set it in, held it upright with one hand and started filling it up with the other...watering little at a time. I am not totally sure how I accomplished this alone, hurt my back, plants are heavy..but made it. Plants are blooming! As far as dormancy taking them out to store, I am in a warmer climate, don't know anything much about that. Do have to put the potted ones on my patio for warmth. Karen B.

I have never had an issue on my rugs or floors....But, if you want to go high end on your rugs, you could always use plastic tarp which is breathable and also water proof...I think you are afraid of condensation? I did not have that issue with my floors... But here is a description of it and a place you can buy it unless you can get some at a big box store...Works wonders. Here is a fact. With that many trees, you risk the problem of pests..You can not treat for pests and not get anything on your rug with only the use of pots.. You can never mist your leaves as they truly enjoy because water will drip around your pots. If a pot happens to tip over, you will get dirt every where with that many in there.. Trust me your choice to put something down to protect that rug or floors is very smart, because saucers alone will just not do it, not with that many trees..)
