Well you certainly whacked it! Have to say, I also agree with PS as I would have let it grow a little more before cutting it back so severely, but the deed is done as they say so let's hope it does re-grow for you into what you have envisaged.

OK, you ask how long it will take, that depends both on you, and the plant. For your part, it rests on the conditions you give it with regard to light, food and water etc. It could well sprout tomorrow, it may take weeks,. We have no idea where you live as you haven't added your country or zone after your name, that always helps you know!

They tend to sprout from a node, I can see there is one node on each of the two right arms, and one growth point where they split, so hopefully something will push out there. Those two last sections will however dry and drop off, so the plant will have shorter arms than it currently has. As for that left arm, can't tell from the pic if it has a node on it, if it has the last section again will dry and drop, if there's no node that branch may well not sprout forth. Sometimes they do dry and drop more than one section so may have been wise to leave a few more, as Imho it's best to err on the side of caution then cut back further once you see where there is growt h starting. Jsut my thoughts:)

So, basically you could potentially end up with few new growth points or it could well turn into our best Hummels bonsai yet! That said, I hope it does what you hope it will :) please keep us up to speed with its progress.

I have one just like that, in exactly the same terracotta pot (17"?). It toppled under strong winds in Victoria 3 weeks ago, so i pruned it back, though not by choice, to how it looks like in pic #2. The first baby buds came out 1 week ago, now all nodes have baby buds and looking very promising. Yours will be fine.

So you reckon the pot in the op's pic is 17inch, gosh! Here in the UK most pots are sold by their top diameter measurements, so that's one big pot! I do wish ppl would Give us a clue as to a plants size, eg a biro alongside their plants for scale!

Gill, now you should know that few folks on this side of the pond know what a biro is. For my North American friends, it isn't a type of desk - it's a ball-point pen. That pot isn't 17" wide, btw. I'd be surprised if it's more than 10".

It's a daring and exhilarating experience to whack, isn't it? My first time, every nerve beneath my skin was tingling and my heart raced like a teenager's on a date.

Remember to withhold water until you see new growth. Depending on your location- average temperatures and light quality, it may be 2-8 weeks before you see anything.

If it develops new growth points in undesirable locations i.e. facing another branch or lower on the main trunk, you can gently nudge it off while small to promote energy going towards desirable growth without causing any measurable set backs or scarring.

Hi Jeff! Had no idea you wouldn't all be familiar with a biro, or is this a spot of over the pond leg pulling I wonder? No one here calls them ball point pens, biro is the generic term we all tend to use....just as a vacuum is a hoover!

As for the size, I was struggling to see it as a 17in pot, I probably didn't word my statements clearly did I? the plant is only a juvenile as we can see from the colour of the stem and it's overall growth pattern so the pot is as you say, much smaller. Think there's a bit of 'male over exaggerating syndrome' going on here :)

'biro' is not encountered over here - really, I'm not having you on, although as you know I quite like to. Now, mind you, I've not lived in Atlantic Canada, so for all I know they may use it there (breton to confirm). I'll also ask my wife, who is from Halifax, NS (as breton is, too, I believe).

We're all fisherman - we say this much (.......................... ) is this much (.......................................... ). I was thinking that it may be as you say, a 27cm pot (the German / Italian ones I like to find are this size, among others), and it's measured as you say, across from the outer edges of the top of the pot. You worded fine - it's good English, proper-like!

I have to say, I think it was a bit too young to whack...I would never whack children, only adults.

Never heard Biro here in New York City either...Ball point pen for me, but you did bring up a good point. I've been trying to incorporate a can of diet Coke in my pictures lately, since that's what I drink, and most of us would understand the scale.

Oooooh, Biro. Like a Bic. Wait...I guess that could be a pen or a lighter. So much confusion.

As for the plant, a bit neked for my liking, but I'm sure it will be fine. Don't overwater while waiting for foliage as it will be a long time coming at this time of year.

Bic Cristal used to be sold as Biro back in the 1950s.

Whacked plant looks too clean to be an outside liver so if it's warm indoors it probably never goes dormant? :)

I differ from everyone here, I never chop my jades. Maybe if I came across one in bad shape and of a fair size, I'd consider it...

I'll echo several of the sentiments here.....

I wouldn't have so vigorously pruned such a young Jade that, to my eye, was already compact and bushy and on its way to a wonderfully balanced canopy. If the chop didn't shock it too much, it will certainly bounce back with many new branchlets.

That size jade I would only tip it. I just hand tipped mine. The first two leaves. It should come back, but what you did is very drastic.

Just an update... So, after 1 year & 4 months, I thought I post and share how the plant is today. It did recover very well but it's no longer a Hummel's Sunset Jade IMO, which I don't mind. I just find it amazing that from a Hummel's Sunset, it reverted to a normal one.

It looks very pretty and healthy! Too bad about the reversion, though:(.

With more sunlight this coming season, it will probably begin to color up again....hopefully.

Glad to see it survived the chop anyway despite now being green, maybe as mentioned, it will colour up later on. Must say it doesn't look that different to what it did before :-/ Did the drastic cut back give you your desired look, can't really see through the canopy to view the trunk.....what I'm trying to ascertain is....was it worth it in your opinion? Tip pinching us the best way to fill out a sparsely branched jade, especially a small one.

Hello, the trunk is pretty much the same size as before. I don't really mind, as I did not have any expectation in particular. I was just curious at that time. But all in all, I am glad that I still have the plant. And yes, I do tip pinch sometimes.

Can the permanently revert to green after a pruning like that? I received a free Hummels Sunset cutting from an Etsy seller when I bought another succulent. I planted and it's doing great, and it's coloring up nicely , I'm excited, just want it to hurry and grow as I'm not a spring chick anymore

I'm not sure it was ever a Hummels sunset IMO

I agree with jalcon that it may just be a regular jade. Hummel's have reddish stems and more colouring on the leaves too. Or maybe it just needs to mature more.

Few weeks after repotting and tip pruning, I think the plant is starting/sprouting new hummel sunset leaves. Which is nice to see and know.
