dual fuel vs gas slide in range?
Comments (4)We have a gas range and have never had any problems with the oven igniter ever. I think that's an unusual problem, I've lived in apartments with cheap ranges for years and never had that issue. My understanding is that dual fuel is good if you bake a lot and want a consistent oven temp along with benefits of a gas cook top....See MoreDual fuel vs gas and a/c
Comments (4)Also in ATL with a dual fuel HP setup. I would definitely do dual fuel again. Ours is Rheem/Ruud 3.5 ton with 80% 2-stage furnace and VS air handler. Based on the winter this year, I don't know that you can assume a 95% furnace is nuts. But my HP also doesn't put out much heat at or below 30F and is set to shut off there. Newer models do better lower- IIRC ours is only doing 27k BTUs at the low end. The sucky part is getting a big NG bill on top of a $200 power bill. Some part of that is about $30 in pass through cost per month on the NG. So, going 95% would trim that back about ~20%, but you'd have to do the math to see if it was worth the extra up-front cost. The most important thing you can do, IMO, is get a good thermostat. My vote is for the Honeywell Vision Pro or IAQ stats with an outdoor sensor so that the stat can stage the system. Equivalent from one of your listed mfr.s is OK, but I know nothing about them (exc a little about the Carrier Infinity one w/ good dehumidifying setup). I'd also get one of the deep media filters rather than the standard dinky ones- Aprilaire or Honeywell. I'd want to know about the mfr. warranty on the various parts for comparison's sake. I'd also get my ducts blown to test/fix leakage. No point in getting super efficient equipment if the heat's ending up in the attic. I also noticed my hot lineset in the attic on IR photos I took a couple months ago. Haven't concluded yet whether it ought to be fully insulated for HP. I can tell you who originally put in the equipment (douchebag) and who finished the job and has serviced it (good folks) if you want to e-mail me....See MoreQuestions on Dual Fuel System
Comments (2)I'm not sure I totally get tigerdunes "active" vs. "passive" terminology. In my limited experience, here's what I observed with my system (Rheem/Ruud dual fuel in ATL). The external "dual fuel kit" is a mechanical switch with (presuming) a bi-metal coil that moves as the temperature changes and opens the switch to lock out the HP below the set temperature. I didn't think this was very accurate- I generally couldn't tell when the HP was locked out, and changing the setting via dial at the kit didn't seem to have any effect. The alternative I like better is a thermostat (Honeywell Vision Pro) with its own outdoor sensor to control the switchover. This is different, I believe, than what tigerdunes describes for passive switchover. But it's loads better than the outdoor kit at the HP just based on accurate temperature measurement. The only downside is that Honeywell only allows you to change the lockout temperature in 5F increments. I think the Vision Pro combines all of the features in a relatively smart package- accurate temperature measurement for locking out HP, and the ability to call the gas-fired stage if the system can't keep up with demand....See MoreDual fuel HP-Lennox XP19 vsTrane XL15i
Comments (3)IMO you are right was not thinking and I was aware of the tax incentive. Live in central VA-mixed climate. I guess I have to think long range and reconsider furnace over 90% efficiency. Just don't know how much it will be used but I did look worst case at least 50% of the time. I thought I had the right numbers but will see the lennox guy tomorrow. I plan on heating just the upper main level more than the LL in anas the lower (finished basement) will not be used much in the winter, (lots in the summer) after next year unless daughter comes home. Both dealers are fine. I want two zones and would like for you to tell me the pros and cons between 2-stage and single stage unit. I remember that you-all said the Lennox low BTU's of high heating (32,200) but great numbers for everything else. There was also a high recommendation for Bryant if I remember the 286ANA HP with the Evolution Controller. See we do listen to you experts(some)! As for dealers -word gets around real quick on who to stay away from in small rural towns. Bryant not real close by. Lisa...See Moredgeist
