Cultured Marble vs onyx collection vs solid surface shower pan
Comments (78)Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Comments (12)That depends on the type of marble... I can spend $10 for a piece of Carrera marble with a bevel on each top end from the local Home Cheapo, $25 for Carrera with much nicer looking bullnose sides from my granite guy. I've spent well over $100 for a pure white Thassos marble saddle for a 5' long shower curb. Exactly. It cost me even more than that once for blue pearl. (175.00) If I can use a standard carrara threshold, I won't even charge for it, because what I lose in the material cost, I make up for in time savings. Anything more than that, though, whatever it costs me gets passed on to the customer, as it should be....See MoreBathroom thresholds, shower curbs and niche shelves- tile/stone?
Comments (6)So there will be a height differential between the two floors? If not, you could just have the wood go right up to the tile floor. Sorry if I am not explaining this well, but our tile and wood floor meet in the doorway with no threshold. Assuming there is a height difference, I probably would choose a wood threshold -- unless you want to use a different material for visibility? Hope others will chime in with suggestions for you. Comments (14)From the picture you can see the shower pan on the curb. What other waterproofing are you expecting? There’s shower pan covering the entirety of the shower basin and bench. Also the tiles in the picture with spots of thin set were removed. All of the shower has full coverage of material behind the tile. We were playing with different heights for the curb to ensure it meets code with regard to the distance from the drain. The fall on the bench and basin meets code as well. What waterproofing do you expect between the shower pan, the Durock, Thinset/mastic and the tile? PS. - it’s metal studs on concrete slab. So rotting isn’t a worry. Also, I’m the husband....See MoreShelley Graham
