Roots everywhere. Can 5-1-1 mix easily be reused in a 2nd season?

Hi all,

From past threads recall that 5-1-1 may generally be considered ok for a second outdoor season (with maybe a sprinkle refresh of SRF or Ca-Mg/lime), and perhaps especially if made with uncomposted bark.

Really used it for the first time last season, and it was great. With very lengthy autumn weather, many annual-in-this-zone plants slowed but stayed green until spikes of sub-freezing temps around the New Year. When cutting the unappealing dead stems, noticed just how much a well-draining mix encourages root-growth - as any attempt to pull a stem out brought with it an entirely networked mass of medium in the shape of the container - and don't think it was frozen. (Never an issue with MG :)

Obviously a 5-1-1 newbie, and curious if this is usual. Is a mechanical breakdown and screening of mix before reuse just assumed? Or is it likely more winter will significantly break down a disused root network? Or do experienced container gardeners just ignore old roots.

Know it's a little early to start thinking about the next planting season, but it makes things feel warmer while the blizzard keeps blowing.
