Making bean soup with canned beans
Comments (5)I have used canned beans many times...As a matter of fact, I can my own beans so I can easily make soup. I have never used pork and beans for soup though...I will have to try that one. I just rinse mine and toss them in the broth... I love beans...I love the campbells bean soup......See Morebeans for bean soup question
Comments (14)We eat a pound or two of pintos every week. I rinse them till the water is clean, boil them for a minute, let them soak an hour or two, then pressure cook them for seven minutes in the soaking water and let the pressure release on its own. We season them in many ways after they are cooked. At least with pintos, cooking them in the soaking water results in a nice, thick deep brown saucy liquid that we use when we season the beans..or make soup...or mash, or whatever we do with them. For soup, I add chicken broth and other vegetables. I wouldn't dream of throwing out the soaking liquid...and we do not have a gas problem here. We've been cooking them this way for about three years now. I understand many people have problems with the gas, and I'm very glad we don't. We have always eaten a variety of beans ~ in chili, salads, soups, etc. ~ admittedly, we've gotten kind of hung up on pintos and black beans in the last couple years, but boy, they're good! And versatile. I think the old song about musical fruit has it all wrong! The more you eat, the LESS you toot!...See MoreBear Creek Navy Bean soup
Comments (21)The Bear Creek navy Bean soup is ok for a "once in awhile" soup. As posters above have noted, it is heavy on salt, but this can be diluted if you add stuff to the mix and the additions have little to no salt. It is improved with the addition of meat. Diced ham slices go well. Canned chicken breast is good also. Dice Spam works too, but this may not lower the salt load. I haven't checked the salt content of Spam. You can add no-fat milk, but be careful. Too much milk will increase the tnedancy to boil over during the cooking phase (about 10 minutes for altitudes under 2000 ft.) Adding liquids, milk, V8 tomato juice, or water, will thin the soup, but more about that later. At the end of the cooking phase, lower the flame to minimum and stir in potato flakes to thicken. Add spices to taste. The soup mix already contains spices and flavorings. Adding the wrong spices/flavorings can mess up the soup. Experiment to suit your taste. If you like strong spicy soups, add stuff like horseradish sauce, or your favorite pepper sauce. A little Louisana hot sauce adds a kick. If pepper sauce has not been added to soup pot, freshly ground black pepper added to taste in your bowl goes well. Low sodium soda crackers add a nice finish. Instead of regular crackers, try oyster crackers. These do wonders for a soup....See Morecooking beans for soup
Comments (1)Could the beans be old? Maybe the 'meat' of the bean dried up some and shrunk. Just a guess on my part. Leslie...See More- 8 years ago
