Follow-up/ pics of old cemeteries & stones
Comments (14)duchesse nalabama.....I was certainly surprised myself at how close those headstones (in photo 3) were together. It seems there are only inches between the graves! I have no idea why they are so close, except to say that the graves close like that were the oldest stones in the cemetery. The other parts of the cemetery where the stones were more recent, they were farther apart. Maybe the original cemetery plot was small so they had to crowd them together like that for lack of space? It did appear to me that they enlarged the cemetery in later years. hunt4cem-roses....(great name, btw!)....Its great to know of yet another fellow enthusiast and I hope you will continue to join in the forum! I love hearing from others about their 'finds' and experiences. DH and I always wonder what kinds of roses folks are finding in other parts of the country. It certainly is an enjoyable pastime that not many people other than ourselves truly understand. People think we're a bit 'odd' the way we explore so many old cemeteries...lol. mendocino rose....Glad you were able to visit up 'our way'. New England really IS beautiful, although this time of year we are all getting restless for the snow to go away! Celeste...See MoreFollow Up on ID... Whirlwind or something else?
Comments (11)Sally: I use flickr. I have a photobucket account and it will let you put writing on pics, but for some reason the writing doesn't show up in posts. Your whirlwind pic looks pretty similar to my unnamed hosta. Does the inside ever turn white? Phil: I wondered if it was a mislabled undulata as well. The only thing that made me wonder is that its leaves are really thick and shiny. Very similar to Queen Josephine's leaves... only curly! Whatever it is, I like it. I wish I could remember where I bought it. Ken: 1st 2 pics (supposed whirlwinds) were taken on the same day. Late afternoon, bright and sunny. Last 2 pics were taken this morning. Dreary, foggy, misty. Will it ever really be summer?...See MoreFollow up: My Mint isn't very minty
Comments (3)Mostly I was just passing on the information below, since it really seamed to explain why my spearmint grown from seeds was less than stellar. It's a exerpt from the link I originally posted. I would never have thought of this so I was happy to find that cross at the farmer's market ---------------------- Like other herbs that have long been misunderstood by the industry, starting with seeds is a recipe for disappointment. Although âÂÂpeppermintâ seeds are widely sold by seed companies, the true peppermint, Mentha x piperita, is a sterile hybrid that cannot produce seeds. Artificial crossing of its putative parents is an exercise in futility because any seeds produced by such crosses result in diverse forms, most of which will not possess the characteristic peppermint aroma and flavour. What is commonly sold as âÂÂpeppermintâ seeds is in fact a rank-smelling form of spearmint (Mentha spicata) which has no value as a kitchen herb. While commercial spearmint seeds are at least the correct species â» Mentha spicata â» plants grown from them have all the wrong combinations of essential oils, with, again, an undesirable rank smell and flavour....See MoreHow Old Are/Were Your Parents?....
Comments (59)My Dad died on 6/7/8 at the age of 82. He was a physician who quit smoking cigs when I was a baby (I'm 56) because of the health hazards, but took up cigars. When I was 14 he was diagnosed with oral cancer and had a radical neck surgery to get the lymph nodes. It was a trying time, Mom had to work a menial job at his hospital just for health insurance. But he survived for many years after that, worked as a physician until a few years before he died. I had the privilege of taking care of him for about 18 months before he died. I was always a "Daddy's girl" and adored him. My Mom is still alive and 83. She will be 84 in June and is pretty active. She only takes one low dose med for slightly elevated blood pressure. Still has all of her marbles, does the NYT crossword every day and works on the Sunday one for a few days, along with the cryptoquote. I am taking her on a cruise in May, just me and her....See More
