Pruning for what reason? Are these newly planted? Generally, pruning is more closely tied to time of year rather than the establishment (or lack of) of the plant and with broadleaved evergreens, the recommended time is late winter/early spring when the plant starts to push new growth. However, if you value the late spring flowers on the privet (and many don't due to their cloying scent or their ability to set berries/seed), then you can wait until after the bloom period.

As to pruning newly planted shrubs, other than removing any damaged wood, I'd recommend leaving then alone for at least a full growing season. They need that foliage to help with establishment and that takes at least a growing season (one year) or more.

You should also be aware that wax leaf privet is an invasive species through much of the south and and is known to produce copious 'volunteers' and/or has naturalized in CA and is considered borderline invasive in that state as well.

with a new planting.. i would not prune for at least two seasons ...

the first to let the roots settle in and get established....

the second to grow free .. to work towards the goal i wanted to accomplish

pruning is not really requisite.. for the hell of it ... lol ... what is your goal??

ps: as one examply .... usually privet is sheared into a box-like form ... but one might prune it into a topiary design ... so a good start .. would be looking up the terms.. and using the one that more closely aligns with your future goal ...
