Suggestions for tall plants to shield wind/sun

Jonathan Kang

I'm in a zone 7 on the 10th floor facing west. My balcony right now has a floor-to-ceiling window connected to my bedroom. During the afternoon, the sun is blaring hot. I'd like to do some gardening (herbs, lettuce, maybe some produce) on my balcony but I think the afternoon sun might be too harsh, especially during the summer (I've already had 1 plant burn).

I think I might be able to get around this by planting some tall, hardy plants that can withstand (sometimes fairly high) winds and sun. What I have pictured in my is to have some light shine through the leaves.

Any recommendations on what type of plants I can put there for that purpose?
