Monarch wings: To trim or not to trim?
Comments (18)Unfortunately, if the wings have dried, that's their final shape. On emergence, the most critical time for a butterfly is while its expanding its wings. There is a limited time for this process. After a period of time, the wings harden. If the butterfly is touched or handled during this period, it may interfere with the process resulting in failure of wing formation. Weather and temperature are factors as well. This may be a case of "survival of the fittest". In nature, there are some failures, usually due to a deficiency or other stroke of bad luck....See MoreTo trim or not to trim...

Comments (12)Longer you leave all leaves and branches on, plant gets more food. It will grow better and trunk should fatten up too. I leave leaves and branches on for few years; it is easy to prune them off but takes a while to grow them. Most often, I prune when I want to give a cutting to someone. I have 3 f the 'Giant Hobbits; and that is enough; but have 2 small cuttings growing separately that I cut off where there was trifurcation. Also pruned probably 3 or4 times to send a cutting. Keeping them dry in winter is good, since the light levels are usually lower. They need good light to grow compact. I have supplemental lights, but outdoors sun is the best. If you water them more often under less light, they will etiolate. Your plant looks pretty good. Here is a pot I got in June 2016; there were 3 small plants in it: I eventually separated them and photo I posted in previous post is 1 of them now....See MoreHardie trim or windsor one trim for exterior?
