Does anyone remember how to grow African Violets?
Comments (33)Hello Lisa, why are you trying to grow a banana? Does it conjure up tropical images? There is one growing next door that is hated by the other next door because it sends runners under the fence. It even has bananas but is not a thing of beauty. Micro clime thing. North slope, no frost. No banana plantation was ever on the flat. Does that help? I'd like to grow Lily of the valley, tulips, daffodils and a few other things but i know they would be a complete waste of time so i do not bother Somewhat on topic. I love Drosera capensis but it is not growing as well as it should for something that is supposed to send seed everywhere. Comment re. Afican Violets.Beeeeeeeesssssssssts of plants, anyway they would take up space where i can grow orchids.....See MoreB. 'Million kisses'

Comments (11)One of these years I've gotta learn to post pictures. Right now I guess my best begonia is Silvermist. It had a little trouble over the winter and I put it in the ground, and when my plant club met here last week I gave everyone who wanted one cuttings, so it's not real huge but it's blooming well and filling out nicely. Cracklin' Rosie is looking pretty good, and so is Little Miss Mummey. From a little distance Lois Burks looks great--she's huge and full of bloom (not a tall one, but probably close to three feet across) but up close it's got some bad leaves from getting too dry too many times, and some bare stems where I've taken off leaves. Tom Ment and Snow Capped are similar and pretty small, but too busy blooming to grow much. They're all favorites! And then there's the rhizomatous ones-- As for Torch--as soon as I found it I gave it protection, and the stem looks live, but it doesn't have any leaves to drop. It may well be back--it's amazing what they'll put up with. I'm sure it would have been okay with that much sun if I'd realized it was that sunny there and taken it a step at a time. Usually do that, but that's a new area I've just started planting in....See MoreAnyone growing Begonia scapigera?
Comments (2)Holy Cow! That sure can get to be a "Big 'Un", huh? What a nicely branched rhizome, though. And that is neat to see how it holds the orange flowers under the foliage. Thanks for such great photos! So I guess I'll try it in the larger bubble bowl, and eventually keep it in check with some pruning (being terribly optimistic and assuming I'm able to keep it going long enough to GET big, LOL!). I'd love to try it in an open pot during the summers here - that's really neat to see it in the big hanger. Which nursery is it - I see all sorts of begonias in hanging baskets in the background. Hmmm, time to call those cousins of mine in Orlando...... *wink*. Thanks VERY much for all the great information - its always interesting to see what others have done. Happy Growing! -Jane...See MoreCheddarchick
