It is overwhelming too in that you will also need to find someone to help with things around your home.

I'm sorry your children weren't with you on your birthday. I understand, but give thanks that you have been blessed with another year of life. Our only daughter lives up in MI and we never get to see her, so we too are all alone. We have to "hire" any help we need done. That's life.

Happy Birthday! I guess that's what happens when years go by - kids grow up and move on to live their own lives. Sad for us, but great for them. I hope you got a chance to chat with both your kids.

I feel for you. I've been lucky my kids are nearby, but we never get to see our granddaughter who went to college in Pittsburgh , graduated a few years ago, and permanently stayed. We saw her last week, and now not until August. It's very common these days to have children/grandchildren not live nearby. Try Skype or facetime. That might help. Make an appointment every few days . Technology is great that way.

I read an article recently that talked about grandparents moving to be near grandchildren. There is a lot to be said for community and home ownership, but a lot to be said for renting a townhome or nice apartment near family.

I am so sorry that you were sad on your birthday. It must be a specialized school that your son will be studying at. Savannah is nice in the winter, could you go for a visit?

It's a bummer to feel sad on your birthday, but I'm sure you are glad for your son and his family. As others have suggested, use Skype, so you can see each other--maybe weekly.? Our two granddaughters live within two hours of us, but because of young children and the hassles of traveling with them, they don't get to our house very often, and because of health concerns, my DH and I don't travel very far, either.

I'm sorry. It's hard to be away from loved ones. I hope you can find something to make your day happier. It's Monday and a good day to do something different. I'd suggest: go to your closet, get something cheerful to wear like a colorful sweater scarf or piece of jewelry. and head outside. If you're a homebody, take a nice walk. Otherwise treat yourself to a fancy coffee, dessert, lunch in town or flowers and think of all of us out here who are wishing you a good day. Happy Birthday!

Thank you all for the good wishes and advice. Don't get me wrong I am happy for them. Adellabedella I just made plans to go out for dinner with a friend. I think it will help cheer me up a bit.
