Oldrosarian, the roses look beautiful, but those sound like good reasons. Better to enjoy them in photographs :-)

I have a stone planter box by a block wall that is a difficult spot for a rose, because of the radiant heat. But I have my heart set on a red rose there. I tried Olympiad which had beautiful grey-green leaves washed with a haze of purple. I gave it away, because I didn't like the shade of the red blooms and they had no scent. I miss the healthy foliage. My coworker happily grows it now. Perhaps I made a mistake by giving it away, because it could take the heat.

I replaced it with Oklahoma, but the blooms fried and the leaves didn't look happy with the radiant heat of the wall. My coworker was once again the recipient of a red rose.

Today I ordered an own root Ingrid Bergman. I saw it in person when it was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and it looked fabulous when other roses around it looked faded and stressed. The bloom form wasn't perfect, but I've decided to try it, because it can take the heat, I like the color and can detect a mild scent. Hopefully it's a keeper and will do well in that spot.

I have a small property and only grow 19 roses. I'm happy with most of my rose choices thanks to this forum and research on Help Me Find Roses. Still, we don't truly know how a rose will do until it is grown in our own garden.

I was trying to find some information the other day and went back scrolling through my spread sheet of "past roses." (Yes, I have enough to take up a whole sheet of its own with that category.) It's really interesting to review what left my gardens and why....and I didn't find any that I regretted.

Life is too short to grow roses that don't make us happy. Hat's off to you Oldrosarian!

Happy to say no one made the shovel prune list this year. Yay But when I went no spray years ago it was a sorry site indeed. Broke a few shovels that year.

I did the same thing oldrosarian. I decided I was getting to old to not have exactly what I want so a shovel pruning I did. My roses not to mention my neighbors probably thought thats how I looked while digging those babies up. Your Bolero must be diff from mine bc mine looks nothing like that. Your roses all looked pretty though but we gotta do what we gotta do. Judy

Dave's Garden has a definition of shovel pruning and others are welcome to add their own definition. I like this one written by dovey:

"After heaping abundant attention, love and patience on an unsatisfactory rose, shovel-pruning is the means by which the rosarian renders their final & fatal opinion of its performance".

Jim, that's exactly what I look like when I go after blister beetles, except I'm wearing purple gardening gloves--purple, that is, until they're stained with beetle juice--bwah, ahahah!

I want to echo what others have said in this thread, and that is, I'm too old to keep growing plants that are still not pleasing me after five years of trial. I want to enjoy my roses now and have limited space to do so. Diane

I have already started my "hit list" for 2016. Crescendo is on that list and has been, but I keep thinking maybe next year will be better. This winter has been warmer and I am thinking it will get some stem length. Blooms can be beautiful, lasting, and fragrant. The downside in my garden are thrips love, blooms waterspot bad, bs, and short stems. I think the waterspotting of a potentially beautiful bloom is the most justifiable reason to exit the garden. We had so much rain last year. I have had it several years and always same experience.

I was very excited when I got Kordes rose Cinderella Fairy Tale. Carefully planted it in a special " everyone will be sure to see it" place. This how it looked in full bloom.

But this is how it looked after heavy rains in the PNW.

Oldrosarian, how long did it take to deadhead Cinderella? If you had more of the second picture, I can definitely understand why you sp'd it.

I'm with everyone else, it's gone if I don't love it. I garden in pots, so when I look out the back window, I see about 5 pots this year, that are still there. They were ones I didn't want, I let winter kill them for me.

I know I've got a problem this year. I have more roses on order then I have spots for them in the garden. All of the bare root roses have a place but I have 8 fortuniana roses (in 1 gal. pots) I'm ready to order and only have 6 empty places for them. I'm looking REALLY hard at the 2 Gemini bush's. They grow well. Produce lots of blooms. But I might see MAYBE 3 or 4 blooms every year that catch my attention. We'll see what the spring brings.

oooh....Gemini is a fantastic rose here. But...the fun is also in getting new roses, isn't it. :)

That is hilarious and pretty much the best way to describe that rose. I find most tea roses have this problem so I stopped growing them. They do well in my climate, they are easy care, etc, but they get huge and if I don't like the bloom what is the point? With the exception of Duchess De Brabant who sometimes looks like she's having a bad hair day but usually looks presentable. She's a good performer for me so she' earned her place in my yard! :)

I have trouble getting rid of roses. Even those that are on the brink of death, I try to nurse them back to health (a difficult feat in my climate, once they start to decline, its very difficult to bring them back). I'm working on trying to grow ONLY the ones that perform well and SHOVEL PRUNE the ones that don't bring me absolute JOY but its so hard. I always think they'll do better even though they usually don't. :(

Good choices as all of these are top roses to grow.

Wow! For some reason I thought the pink one would be an Austin. I'm so glad to hear about Cream Veranda as I just ordered it and its arriving on Thursday from Chamblees. Boy am I gitty. I've heard good things about Aloha is Aloha 49 different? I'm going to look all these up right now!

Aloha and Aloha are the same rose. It is registered as a tall hybrid tea but in climates that don't get a nasty winter, if not pruned, will grow to about 9 feet as a climber.

Cream Veranda was supposed to be about 2 feet according to Kordes description. Not in my garden, I haven't even fertilized it and it grows to 3 1/2 feet already. out clippers!!

Oklahoma never got planted last year. It had blooms when I first got it and I never saw another. Buds crisped in the sun so tried semi-shade, never bloomed. Put it back in the sun, many buds that again crisped before opening. I gave it to someone who lives in a cooler climate.

Countrygirl, maybe you would like Ingrid Bergman, since it is heat tolerant. I ordered mine from Rogue Valley Roses.

My roses mostly just off themselves...too shady and wet where I am.

Daisy, I've been there in former gardens. Maybe Rugosas would love your area.
