It's January 2015- How is your build progressing?
Comments (150)andrew-love dormers, that is an amazing transformation. Are you living IN it mid demo? I am a fellow Michigander as well. Michelle-ummm, well yes there are a *few* things I would change, lol. Overall it's fine but I really really really wish we would have buffered the master area a little better due to the opposite shift thing. I love that I can get into the bathroom/closet without disturbing dh (and turn the lights on and see my clothes and all that fun stuff) but wish we would have had the closet between the bedroom and the bath instead of the other way around. I do wake up when he comes home at 3 a.m. and that is a bummer because I never used to. But for normal schedules the layout we have would have been just fine. The other thing is I think I would have put a door in by our locker area that faces front - a friend/family type entrance. Not a big deal but I think we would have used it. The locker area is functioning well and I like that it's not in the walk way if all the gear doesn't get put away every time. According to dh I still have boxes in the barn that belong in the kitchen - say what? My kitchen is already functioning so what could they be??? Lol. After it warms a bit I will have to check it out. We are mostly settled though and I know where most everything is now, hehehe. My current hearts desire is grass. The dirt of course is covered by snow right now but I know it's there! I love my closet organizer system, that I have room to dress in my closet. I love my cabinets and my blum glides and my woodhollow inserts in my kitchen. I love my property and that our living areas face the back and that we get to enjoy that view every single day. I was also going to comment on your back yard discovery, did you snow shoe or cross country? I can't remember now but I remember that pic - awesome. We found a whole trail system behind our house and I feel like we hit the jackpot. It is amazing. It is an equestrian trail but this time of year no horses on it - there are snowmobile trails too. DH and I have been doing some hiking. I love the fresh air and it is so beautiful to look at. I will be checking in time to time. I still covet your office off your kitchen. :D aimless-I keep reading my head Horton Hears a Who and was looking for a Dr. Seuss sign or something!...See MoreEuropean River cruise packing list??
Comments (21)I have never been on a river cruise so this is just aimed at general cruising in Europe experience: I was worried about looking too much "like a tourist" and didn't want to wear my comfy sneakers and hat - but then I realized all those ultra fashionable Euro women were not on their feet in the sun 10-12 hours a day like I was! Plus the camera and other boat occupants really gave it away anyway. Walking sandals also worked well for me. I invested in a very light and comfortable white raincoat/windbreaker that didn't quite look like a raincoat - very useful. I didn't quite realize that I would definitely want 3 outfits per port day - comfy cabin clothing, nice clothing for supper, and comfortable clothing to tour in that I couldn't wait to get out of back at the ship as I typically felt extremely grimy after a long day on the streets. I brought enough to do laundry twice which is about right for me on a 14-day trip, but this was on a trip with sea-days so there was downtime for laundry which maybe wouldn't be the case on a river cruise. I always pack a couple of those little polyester roll-up bags tucked in my tote for shopping. And a stash of healthy granola bars for if I get snacky while touring. Wet wipes because sometimes Purell just doesn't seem enough. Speaking of ATM visits - I never experienced anything yet like using a gas station ATM in Sav-La-Mar, Jamaica guarded by two guys with machine guns! I definitely wasn't worried about getting mugged... Left behind - I always bring too many shoes. I always regret leaving flipflops behind - there's just always one grimy shower stall or one rainy day on deck or one damp laundry room where I want my flipflops. Packing e-reader instead of books is well worth it for the weight/space saved. I always pack too many tops and not enough pants/bottoms - forgetting that when travelling, pants are exposed to too much grime and sweat to re-wear reliably. For me, I do pack laundry detergent and a bunch of scarves and nondescript black clothing for suppers. We like coffee and bring travel coffee mugs. Taking photos is important for me so I enjoy having a nice camera along and have never felt like I was unduly targeted for having one. Check dress code and events schedule - people will dress nicely for formal dinners/galas/parties (but evening gowns not required! just something you'd wear to a nice dinner out). My husband has skipped formal meals before due to not wanting to pack a sports/suit jacket...he was happy but I was not! (I like the fancy food). Some people still do evening gown it up to the nines! It is likely that shorts and tank tops would not be allowed in the dining room at supper....See MoreIt's December 2015- How is your build progressing?
Comments (90)I've finally, finally, FINALLY got back up to my build two hours north of here yesterday! I hadn't been able to get up there since mid October. Glad I went; I got to fix a couple things before they went too far in a direction I didn't want. Here's me and my house -- and here you can also guess why I haven't gotten back to my future home until now: (I thank a good friend of mine who was able to take 5 hours out of his time to drive and come up with me -- although we both had a great time doing this.) The garage door is painted and about ready to go on -- here are the panels ready and waiting -- this door matches the front door -- this part of the job should be finished tomorrow: I love the front of the house, including the private guest room entry area on the porch. There will be a rustic railing here eventually. And I am hunting down a source for three log rocking chairs -- but they have to be comfortable. Here are two views of the back of the house (taken by my friend, as I wasn't about to be able to navigate this on crutches) -- the white framing on the white doors will be painted "Anderson terratone" to match the windows and that deck French door. First photo from the eastern side; second from the western, in the midst of what I call "Juniper Island". All doors except the French doors on the deck in back will be handicap accessible. Since those doors open out, there will be a step, but with the potential for a future ramp. Yes, there will be steps from the deck on down (right side) but access to the deck itself will be wheelchair accessible. Scenery, you know! PS, the opening in the lower right: a window into future workshop room... And in the basement: Mechanicals to the far/deep right. The blocked-in area around center will be a place for an eventual half-bath geared towards space to clean off after tending livestock (chickens, goats, small sheep), which are livestock I intend to raise when I'm able-bodied for such activities. The photo was taken by my friend, while standing in my future root cellar portion of the basement -- to the immediate left will be a workshop for stained glass and for woodworking activities....See More2015 resolution thread link- how did you do?
Comments (8)Ohhhh....I was the one who posted that. Well, I was just so-so on keeping my resolutions. I did try more yoga and meditation. It seemed easier for me to meditate regularly (nothing major, just 5-10 min every morning) when I was going to yoga regularly. They just seemed to go hand in hand. Then I did something to my shoulder, and I had to stop yoga. Still hoping to get back to both activities, because I do think they were beneficial to my mental health...just not for my wonky shoulder. This fall, our family life seemed more "settled" than it had been for quite a while. Oldest DS found a job that seems like a good fit, second DS was feeling more settled in college, and DD was very happy starting high school. Then DH walked into a tree branch in Nov. and ended up at the ER and then had to see an opthalmologist every day for about 10 days, over Thanksgiving, to monitor the healing closely. That healed, although he is on an eye medication until spring! Then, a couple of weeks before Christmas, he woke up with a sore neck, which turned into a lot of pain plus numbness in his arm and hand...long story short, he has 3 herniated discs. So the last month has been a total drag for him, and for me to be honest! Meanwhile, DD is in a back brace for 4-6 weeks due to a gymnastics injury, so I am dealing with her both physically (driving her to conditioning and PT and now, accupuncture) as well as emotionally (it's a huge disappointment that she might miss her entire competitive season). So...see yoga and meditation. I need some of that again! My new years resolution this year is to put all of this in perspective and hope for better health for my family! And I still haven't looked into Invisalign. Doh....See MoreUser
