Seeking opinion for new exterior siding color
Comments (2)if you do yellow, I'd do black shutters and maybe a black door. I think the garage doors and other trim can stay white. The Philadelphia Cream looks really yellow on my screen, but surely different in person. I think the Nantucket grey would look nice with with maroon shutters....See MoreHardie Siding and Exterior - Opinions needed!
Comments (19)In trying to avoid the jigs and jogs:) guess we ended up with a large flat side to the house! There is definitely a pergola going in, as we need something to shade us from the summer noon sun. I hadn't decided if it would be a separate structure away from the house, but if it was attached, it would definitely break up the wall a bit. There will for sure be a deck. It will start at the door, and extend to the back of the house. I also like the idea of making the dining room window more of a feature by making it a bay or a slight bumpout... (the dining room window is the large center one on main floor.) The windows may appear haphazard from the outside, but they are definitely not haphazard on the inside. Not much we can change there....See MoreNeed professional opinion on siding installation issues
Comments (7)You were critical of the work so why would you be critical of someone who shares your opinion or do you not have a sense of humor? You should be grateful that someone with Worthy's reputation would read your entire post. I don't pretend to know as much as Worthy but I suspect this is not a fiber-cement panel with a stucco finish, its a fiber-cement panel with an imitative textured surface that is apparently intended to be face nailed so I'm guessing it relies on caulk and paint to hide the fasteners. I don't think you provided a brand name or manufacturer's installation instructions so I don't know for sure how it should be installed but it doesn't appear to have any flashing at the horizontal joints which the manufacturer would certainly have required and I suspect special square drive s.s. bugle head screws or ribbed wafer-head screws would be recommended too. But in addition to a manufacturer's spec and recommendations you need to tell the contractor in writing how you want it done and you certainly had an advantage after seeing how it should not be done and reading the manufacturer's instructions. I would add flashing where missing and vertical battens to hide the nails. That might also relieve the deadly plainness of the building....See MoreHelp choosing new roof, siding, and windows?!
Comments (6)Here is a web site where you can upload a photo of your home and try out different color roofs to see which you prefer. http://abcmetalroofing.chameleonpower.com You can get paint and repaint your carport to match whatever color you choose for the roof. If the vinyl siding is in good shape, I would keep it. The biggest challenge I see is that the gable end lines up with the top of the window. It would take an architect or clever designer to figure out a way around that dilemma. The home was assembled in layers, and you will need to peel back a few layers to start to change the appearance. Some of the layers are mismatched: the mismatched trellis and the vertical baluster gate. Some are the result of minimal quality construction that does not add to the beauty of the home: the open face steps, the skimpy handrail, and the rolled awning roof that comes so low, it hides part of the front door. The posts in the middle of the left window look odd. Is the porch deep enough to sit on? Would you consider changing the porch and the awning over the door. I know you mentioned wood shutters. Would you consider keeping the existing shutters and painting them to match your new metal roof? To upgrade the look of the house, I would focus on upgrading the entry area. What you do depends upon your skill level and your budget....See Moreklem1
