My KD told me that the appropriate hood choice should be the monster 42" stainless steel pyramid for capture but it's too imposing for my kitchen. Is there any reason why a euro style glass dome hood such as the Kobe CX-183 would not work? I plan on placing the hood between two cabinets. There has to be an option of a hood that has the needed function without being so visually heavy in my small kitchen.

Not to minimize, but I think the concerns over carbon monoxide relative to what the hood is doing should be pretty small. The main thing that affects CO production is how the fuel is burning. If there's enough air, as indicated by a solid blue flame, you shouldn't have to worry. And that's set by the air shutters at the various burners. For the hood to affect the amount of air for combustion, it would have to reduce the amount of air that can get into the shutters to mix with the fuel. That isn't going to happen since the air pressure at the burner is always going to be essentially the same as at the air shutter for that burner. For there not to be enough O2 for the fuel (i.e. enough air, but O2 concentration reduced), there's also not going to be enough O2 for you as the cook. That hints at larger problems not related to the range. I'm not saying there aren't houses where makeup air is needed. It's not just to prevent negatively pressurizing the house, it also lets you control where that air is coming from, as opposed to via infiltration (or an open door/window). I vote to get as big a hood as you can- we have a 42" wide by 27" deep VAH over our 36" BS RNB. We also don't necessarily turn it on when cooking unless we need to. Still here despite all that combusted natural gas (i.e. 2H2O + CO2) we've let into the house. Yes, we have a CO monitor, as should everyone.

This is what makes MUA such "fun." If the air is conditioned, it can be introduced distant from the kitchen or at least distant from the hood and have the best chance of not disrupting the rising effluent plume. If the air is unconditioned and cold, then close proximity is called for (although it is unlikely to be so close as to not chill-out the cook. This could have long-term ramifications. :) Insertion under the range is a good approximation of proximate, but might have these deficiencies: o Some ranges may not like this. Someone on this forum in the last year, I think, pointed out that high-end Brand X gas range instructions prohibited it. I don't recall who X was. I do not know what the basis of the manufacturer's objection was. o For cooktops, cabinets will be in the way. A grill at the feet may be used instead of a cabinet base, and for peninsulas and islands, another on the other side is plausible. Keep in mind that the grill will have to have a rather strong air velocity unless the grill is as large as the hood. Alternatively from floor insertion, a slotted counter top design around the cooktop would provide an ideal air feed location, but inadequate area for the flow rate. Also, it could be an opportunity for difficult cleaning. Pop-up vent systems run backwards come to mind. The air flow onto the cooktop could be disruptive to the flame pattern, so probably should be aimed outward. Flow would likely be too low without a very large pop-up. kas

Just checked my Wolf Design Guide and there is a line of 27-inch deep Pro wall hoods (page 122). Blowers listed for the 42 x 27 hood go up to 900 CFM internal, up to 1100 CFM in-line, and up to 1500 CFM roof mounted (page 129). Note 1: Actual CFM for any blower installed in a ventilation system is less than the zero static pressure rated CFM. Lacking any other information, assume that the rated CFM must exceed the required CFM by a factor of 1.5. Note 2: Components and page numbers are from the Wolf Design Guide dated 11/2014. Note 3: For this size hood I recommend 700 actual CFM; rated blower flow rate should be around 1000 CFM, more with restrictive MUA and/or long ducting; less with unrestricted MUA and a very short duct.
