Anyone tried growing a Scilla peruviana (Caribbean Lily)?
Comments (17)I always use 3% hydrogen peroxide right out of the bottle in plant rot emergencies. Any fleshy root, rhizome, bulb, succulent, etc. can handle it full strength no problem (in my personal experience) It's an insecticide for soil dwelling pests in larval form that feed on root systems. It instantly aerates and loosens compacted soil that won't drain. It's totally safe and organic (you can put it in your mouth, it is an oral debriding agent afterall). It'll foam up on the plant just like it does when used to treat scrapes and cuts on skin. The more rot, the more it foams. If treating a plant in a container, the soil level will even rise like dough because the reaction's byproduct is oxygen and water. Once the foaming subsides, I give a splash of fresh water to wash any residue away. Let the wound dry and callus before watering again or replanting....See MoreCaribbean Breeze Rose
Comments (17)I have been so interested in this rose since she first appeared on J&P's website. But, at the same time, J&P is not allowed to ship roses to Idaho, and no one else sells Caribbean Breeze. Laura, your first set of photos reminds me of a small version of Augusta Luise--really gorgeous, and that's what sold me on her. I'm not surprised she isn't hardy in your zone. My feeling was this little rose was for zone 6 and up. Maybe she'll surprise you and pull through. Diane...See MoreDoes anyone grow Apricot Candy rose ?
Comments (17)Apricot Candy is one of my favorites: 1. extremely disease resistant, 2. super vigorous, 3. reliable winter hardiness almost to the tips, w/o protection (zone 6), 4. heavy bloom with quick repeat, & 5. spectacular bloom in all stages, up to petal drop. And, its petals resist quilling, which quilling, other than on a heavily petaled bloom (50+ petals), irritates me to no end. Apricot Candy is counted among the top 10 best roses I have ever grown so far...that's among all moderns, like: HTs, GFs, FLs, MINIs, MINIFLs, MOD & OGR CLIMBERs; even including: Hybrid Rugosas, English Roses, and all the OGRs. BTW, my top ten roses, not listed best to last, just scrambled together, are: Marie Pavie Quietness Snow Carpet, aka: Snow Pavement, Scheekoppe (Gr.) Evelyn (black spotter 😩, but breathtaking bloom 😁) Quick Silver Apricot Candy Dee-Lish Bliss Parfuma Moonlight Romantica (grown as either HT or Climber, but gets some black spot) Pinkerbelle runners up (2): Jacques Cartier, aka. Marchesa Boccella (grown on multiflora, and stand back! otherwise it limps along in my garden own root). Princess Charlene of Monaco, some black spot Other than Evelyn, Princess Charlene of Monaco, and Moonlight Romantica, all the others are essentially black spot proof, no spraying for disease required here in Pittsburgh, zone 6. Comments (5)On the other hand, a lot of gardens could benefit from some editing. I am no fan of Marie Kondo's extreme measures in discarding our possesions, but there is real value in going through your garden and getting rid of plants that you only keep because of guilt, not pleasure. If you find this difficult to do all at once, try doing it in several passes spaced over a period of time with pauses in between for evaluation and reflection. Your garden exists to bring you joy. It might bring you more joy if you actually love all the plants you grow, and you grow a number that you can manage without exhaustion or stress....See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
