A sad thread for me. I used to have all of the Barden roses. They grew well here and the flowers were lovely. When I went no spray I had to get rid of them. This isn't their kind of weather. :-(

Red Wolf, I love your Bardens--especially Mel's Heritage! The color of Pam's Choice kinda reminds me of Chicago Peace--I really like that color combination.

I know what you mean Patty about some Barden roses being too susceptible to blackspot. I supposedly grow Jeri Jennings, but she has so many disease problems that she's always struggling to survive--though I admit she has managed to survive for about 5 years now.

Here is a pic of Jeri Jennings at her blooming best in my garden--then I moved her, and she has never quite recovered from it. I now have her off in an inconspicuous corner where she can survive on her own if she wants to--or not. I've given up. So far she is surviving.

I love the smoky tips on Dragon's Blood. There is a note on HMF that it is susceptible to black spot. Mel's Heritage is indeed beautiful. Since it's a rambler, the plant won't stay small for long. Wow, that color on Nightmoss! What a perfect name and I would say a must for mossy rose fans. I would like to see more photos of Pam's Choice with that coffee center. Thanks for sharing, Karen.

No Barden roses here, but love looking at everyone elses. Beautiful on this cold, wintery day.

My 'Golden Buddha' keeps perfectly clean foliage until about November -- which is the end of our season, anyway -- when a handful of spots and a touch of mildew may emerge. I don't use fungicides, and I live in New Jersey, so that says a lot. I planted it in 2013, and it has remained under 24" tall without pruning, save for dead-heading and removing minimal Winter damage. But it isn't a wimp -- it sends out new canes, which bloom and branch, but they don't seem to get any taller.

I have one of Barden's roses, Siren's Keep. It was received about 3 months ago as a tiny band, and it pushed out one beautiful little bloom. Unfortunately, I did not photograph it. Now, I really wish I had, as a picture is worth a thousand words. I hope this link works.

Kate, Jeri Jennings looks lovely, too bad she's been unhappy in her new home. That combination of yellow rose blooms paired with the purple and white iris is stunning. Hard to tell, but that iris looks like Bountiful Harvest, which gave me only one flower last year before getting squashed by a 12' branch that came down off my neighbour's maple tree in a thunderstorm! Happily, the iris survived and so I'm looking forward to more flowers next year!

Christopher, Golden Buddha also looks very nice. It seems more apricot than yellow in some of those HMF photos. What's your experience?

Pam's Choice is beautiful. Thanks for posting the bloom in all stages. Even the fade is lovely.

I have Marianne and Siren's Keep, both new last season. Marianne is going to be a big girl, but she's a once bloomer, which I have never had before. She bloomed very well for me her first year, and seems to be very healthy so far, I am happy with her.

The verdict is still out on little Siren's Keep, and it is still very little, patience is called for here. It bloomed very little it's first year and was obviously busy putting down roots. The blooms it put out were small but very pretty. My main complaint is the ugly top growth it had at different times during the season, I have no idea what the problem is, I've never seen this before, and I do hope it grows out of it.

Thank you for starting this thread, redwolfdoc. I am not familiar with Barden roses, but there are some real beauties here. Love the coloring of Pam's Choice.

Sara-Ann, Paul is one of our own. Look for posts from "Trospero", that's Paul. Very knowledgeable, a talented breeder, but unfortunately he doesn't breed roses any longer. He's moved on to something new, I can't remember what he's experimenting with now.

He has several roses I keep intending to try, including Jeri Jennings, Mel's Heritage and Golden Buddha.

Red Wolf--wish I could tell you what that prolific purple and white iris is, but it was given to me by the janitor at the place I used to work. I believe someone told me it was a tetraploid--or something like that. Bigger and frillier than your average iris.

I never saw roses like that growing up , only the classic florist type .
It's hard to see roses develope sickness that they can't tell you whats wrong. I've seen that kind of sickly top before and cut it off. Hope your Siren's keep will overcome it's mysterious problem.

redwolfdoc -- For me, 'Golden Buddha' is more apricot when it's cooler, and "yellower" when it's hot. But at its "yellow-ist", it's about the color of orange juice. Unfortunately, my iPhone tends to tilt it toward the "orange juice" shade more than it is in real life -- but sometimes the stars aligned.

I dug through my facebook albums to find pics of it......

This was from May 22, 2013 -- it's first bloom since coming as a band just a few weeks earlier.

These two were taken October 5, 2013 -- note the quality of the foliage, without the use of fungicides.

These next two were taken in the beginning of June, 2014. The second pic was taken a few days after the first, and that bloom in the first pic is the faded bloom cut off in the top of the second pic. Even after the color fades, petals hold their form for a long time before looking messy.

This pic below shows a little "plonk-o-gold" -- 'Golden Buddha' and 'Golden Celebration'. In indoor lighting, the colors are more accurate. These blooms were from July 2014.

Here's the first bloom on May 25, 2015 -- leaning too far toward "orange juice" than in real life.

Two days later, more opened -- and again, the color isn't accurate, for either 'Golden Buddha' or 'Prospero' to its right.

Another color-inaccurate pic taken May 29, 2015, appearing more washed-out than in real life.

Finally, I realized what I needed to capture the colors accurately -- an overcast day. This last pic was taken in October of this year, just as we were getting our first major cool spell, and which prompted a touch of mildew on 'Golden Buddha'. This is the first time I saw that, and it went away after the weather warmed again. But most importantly for my area, no blackspot. Mildew is far more rare, occurring only during cool wet periods in Spring and Autumn. In Spring, the heat comes in fast and wipes it away. In Autumn, usually frost comes and puts them to bed, and they drop leaves anyway. But this year we had several warm spells after cool spells, and that let some mildew linger on.

All of Paul's roses that I've seen here are really beautiful. My favorite of course is any rose with lavender-purplish tones like Siren's Keep, but Marianne is also stunning.

I have a few of Paul's roses. Some have never bloomed, or only bloomed maybe once. A couple of them are in areas where I'm removing them to put them in the new beds where there's more sunlight. So...hopefully they will do better next season.

Here's what I have:

DRAGON'S BLOOD - A reliable bloomer, even in this kinda shady spot. Probably the best of them. Gets all gangly and sprawly tho.

INCANTATION - Just dug it out of this semi-shady bed and put it in a pot out front. I think it will do much better out there. It's a cute smallish bloom.

PAM'S CHOICE - Hmmm... this is from 2010. Didn't remember it even blooming at all... Hasn't bloomed since. Didn't get planted in a good spot I guess. Will have to change that! Love those colors.

TREASURE TRAIL - Seems to have perked up a bit this yr. Love the form and color. Bloomed paler than this the first couple of times.

I guess the only one that hasn't ever bloomed is OCTOBER MOON. Once I get it moved outta the shady fence area this season, it will do better, I'm sure!

I had DOLLY'S FOREVER ROSE for several yrs. But she up and died on me this past season for some reason. I had her in the front breezeway area in a big pot. Got scorching sun and occasional spider mites. Maybe that's what finished her off... Was a really pretty rose and bloomed alot, but the blooms did blow pretty fast. Looks like it had B/S too...

Oh I forgot about the little mini rose I managed to snag from RVR this summer. It was up on their website very briefly, and I swooped on it! Knew nothing about it except it was called LITTLE GREY PEARL. Appears to be listed on HMF as "LGP2." What a cool little thing! Got about 6-8 little blooms on it before fall hit. One of my favorite weirdo colors... kinda greyish beige-ish blend... I'm looking forward to seeing what it does this season! Blooms are tiny... like 1" or a bit more maybe. Cute lil' thing!

Christopher - thank you for your very thorough rundown on Golden Buddha! It looks great, even if not all that "golden". Reminds me of South Africa a bit.

Beth - one day I'm going to have to crash your house and see your gardens! The number and variety of roses you have is just incredible! :) I also had Incantation and it was very cute, but didn't survive last winter. And I agree about Dragon's Blood getting gangly and sprawly. It does for me as well. I really like the looks of Treasure Trail and Little Grey Pearl - Treasure Trail is lovely, and I'm becoming interested in Moss roses. As for Little Grey Pearl, I'm a total sucker for that kind of "weirdo color"!

I have only Marianne, wanted it for the name without knowing much about it. I expected it to be a low gallica like others I grow but realize with Mossy that she's going to be a big girl, or rather all three plants. I may have to move two of them to give them more room. They are otherwise healthy and trouble free but not yet very freeflowering. The flowers come in all colors from orange over yellow to white.

I only have two Barden roses, Golden Buddha & Incantation, both new for me this year. Although very small so far, they seem pretty healthy here, so I'm thinking of trying more. Glad to see this thread to help me chose which others I might want to add. Treasure Trail, Mel's Heritage & Siren's Keep have been on my wish list. May add Pam's Choice & Nightmoss to that list now :)
