Xpost flooring: home gym flooring

My DH wants to set up a spare bedroom as a home gym with a treadmill and weights.

The room has hardwood flooring which I obviously don't want damaged.

i was thinking of some of these interlocking rubber floor tiles from Home Depot or similar. Would I need to put anjthing down between the tiles and the hardwood? Wondering if a rug pad would add more protection or be overkill or cause the tiles to slip?

anyone have experience with these products?

I have a rubber mat under my treadmill workstation over hardwood. I did not put anything down underneath the rubberized mat. The rubber should prevent scratching of the hardwood.

Most commercial gyms are likely placing the the rubber tiles over concrete, or if you had it in the basement.

So, no, I would not use a rug pad.

You mentioned weights, how much weight and is he really lifting or just flinging around some dumbbells? Oly bar and rack, or a weight machine with pulleys?

I suggest a moisture barrier like Dependable(www.floorprep.com) or Ardex(www.ardex.com) makes, then a rubber floor. Roppe make some nice thick rubber flooring. I just installed some throughout the second floor of an art deco style home. Came in 24"x24" tiles, about 5/8" thick.

I love pirelli flooring and have worked in some places that have it, it is pricey but might be good for that sort of purpose but I don't know how it would be with heavy equipment on it, you might consider alternate garage -oriented flooring, I keep seeing some vinyl type flooring for garages in my local costco, it's basically a large rolled up mat, grey in colour with a metal checkerplate pattern, might be more at home in a garage and you could put it on both sides that way... On the other hand, if pirelli is tough enough and you can afford it, I'd go for it.

I think your flooring guys are correct. Floors can only be sanded about 3 times over their life, which many people do not realize. I would go with new, but check around with some local flooring companies. We were about to buy inexpensive oak from Home Depot for our third floor (not well traveled, didn't need top of the line) when a local flooring company offered us Brazilian cherry for the same price ($4 square foot for materials). Any kind of floor can go in an old house, just depends on your style. If it's rustic, try wide plank pine; oak always works and can be stained different colors to make it unique. Those tiles would work just fine. i still wouldnt be slamming down 100lb dumbells though.

I would be concerned about the weights (because they'll be picked up and put down often) but not the treadmill. My treadmill is sitting right on my hardwood floor, which is solid oak that was refinished just about two years ago. We recently moved the treadmill forward to put some shelves behind it, so I had a chance to see the floor underneath, and it wasn't scratched at all.

If you plan on heavy weights or a free weight rack, you might want to consider a separate weight platform. You can Google for DIY or else purchase one.
