Growing Tomatoes

Two tomatoes one is dark green the other isn't?

I have two Red Robin tomato plants in identical 2 gallon pots, the
same soil-less MG mixture. They are 12+ weeks old. They have the same
lighting, sunny windows with cfl grow lights on for 18 hours a day.

The
only difference between them is I have some kale planted in with one
of them. The kale was up and growing a month before I transplanted the
tomato into the pot.

The plant with the kale is dark green and
the one that has nothing growing with it is healthy but not nearly as
dark green. It is so pale that I'm kinda worried.

I have noticed that when I water them, the one with the kale retains more water. It kind of flushes through the other one.

Kale is supposed to be a bad companion plant for tomatoes from what I have read.

I don't have any bug problems on either one since it is in my house.

Any ideas?

I have a cross post in vegetable gardening, I know it's a no no, but I need help soon!

Try adding some fertilizer. I think the kale is stealing the nutrients!

Linda, wertach says that the plant with the kale is nice and green !!

Here is my theory : You must have added a lot of nitrogen rich fertilizer to the container with kale way back. We know that veggies like kale are hungry for nitrogen (heavy N feeder). Now what you have to do is fertilize the other one with like MG all purpose plant food. It is pretty rich in N and has enough P and K too.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still trying to find a place for the orchid outdoors. There doesn't seem to be anywhere outside that doesn't get direct sunlight for hours at a time. Fortunately, I don't have any slugs outside (eww), and I have many potted plants outside that seem to be bug free for an occasional spider, so I moved the orchid around. For a while, it was on a gravel path. But, as I said I don't even know where to keep it outside, so it goes in and out throughout the day. I have the same model and wonder about its accuracy also. Since you only got 1/3 down, it gives you something to start from. You can either estimate what the opening would be to get the remaining 2/3 down in one pass or repeat your current setting 2 more times. I'd probably go with the current setting as it could release a different amount on your next passes. You problaby know that the dry product manufacturer estimates the setting based on the granule size and the amount of product needed per square foot. So if I need 40lbs of lime per 4000'sf I think the setting is 8 or something like that. For your fertilizer, I would guess it is 40lbs per 5000'sf. Smaller granule, etc. You could figure out your spreader by rigging it up in a fixed station, turning the wheels at a comfortable walking pace and collecting the product. You would have to know how wide the swath is of the spreader but you get the idea. Probably way more than you want to do. I know I have not done it :). I basically estimate how much product I has been put down in one pass and adjust from there. If I had more land to cover, I would not put up with it though. I would want something that put down what it said it does.

Tomato leaves dark green & stunted

This is my second year gardening, and my tomatoes are twice as big this year. The ones in the ground are anyway. I have one tomato in a 25 gallon smart pot but it seems to have stopped growing and its leaves are very dark green. The only other odd thing i notice on it is that part of one of its few stems is starting to curl almost into a ball. Anyone know what might be wrong?

Then I wouldn't worry about feeding it for a couple of weeks. Just give it plain water. And in such a small container consider diluting it to 1/4 strength when using it. It is very strong fertilizer if it is the common 18-18-18 or more. Dave

Sorry for reading that all wrong! I guess the one with the kale is holding the water better and the tomato plant in that container is getting more consistent moisture. If it's possible to put a bowl or large saucer under the other plant, I would try bottom watering. Fill up the saucer and let it sit for an hour or two so that it gets a good drink. As Sey says, some liquid fert. would help too!
