Beware the Mistletoe

I feel a bit Grinch-like, but I couldn't resist posting this link:
Mistletoe makes merry at its host’s expense.

The classic mistletoe is European but there are native American mistletoes, Phoradendron species, which are also hemi-parasitic shrubs.

At least they don't seem to be hardy in New England so you can probably safely discard the used mistletoe kissing ball.

Yikes! I didn't realize it was brought here from Europe specifically for Christmas decorations. My folks are in NC and there is mistletoe down there. I wonder if it's the native variety. Guess I never really thought about it before. People down there actually shoot it out of the treetops. I've never seen it done, and don't particularly care to.

We had a plastic mistletoe at Christmas when I was growing up and that worked just fine! LOL!
