Best varieties of tomatoes for Spring in Phoenix
Comments (7)There are quite a few tomatoes that do well here, the most important thing to maybe remember is.. days to harvest.. shorter harvest days obviously means, you will end up with more tomatoes when is all said and done. But sometimes you just cant beat a brandywine or beefsteak type tomato. Be prepared to wait 80+ days (sometimes in the 70ish range) to pick those beasts. Siberian and san francisco fog are good seeds to start, they are more cold tolerant then alot of varieties, which means you can get em in the ground earlier, they also mature early. Olives, sweet 100's or million's, Lrg Red cherries, all do well, and would be up to you. You'll find what works best for you by trial and error :) There is a nursery in the "arcadia area"(not sure im allowed to put a name down) that usually has a great selection of varieties ;) tips from my experience in growing tomatoes... -inconsistant waterings can lead to cracks on fruit. So don't forget to check moisture, evenly moist at all times, but not sopping wet like a sponge full of water. Remember there is no schedule to water, you water when the plants need it. Weather, humidity, and soil structure will determine a "schedule" for you. -calcium, do not worry about it, our soil has it, if you are unsure, get a soil test to determine if needed. -To establish more of a root structure, and you have plants already started, try stripping the leaves almost half way up, including side shoots at leaf stem base, and planting it up to where the leaves you didn't strip are. Tomatoes develop very adventurous roots from the stem. -Once the tomatoes get some height to them, i like to strip some of the older leaves at the bottom of the plant to allow air circulation through the plant, and prevent stangnant air and fungi build up. -If growing indeterminate tomatoes (grow and produce fruit until killed by frost) a tomato cage usually wont cut it, think bigger, and know that it will want to grow like a vine. -If growing a determinate variety (grow to a certain height, bloom, fruit, ripen all at once, and then usually dies, or will notice decreased vigor in plant usually) You will notice they tend to be more upright and bushy, usually max would be 4' or smaller depending on variety, and you wouldn't need a cage necessarily. -Tomatoes are hungry plants,so feed regularly, and not when you happen to remember to fertilize them. -High alkalinity in the soil and water CAN create an environment in the soil where a plant can't uptake certain nutrients, so try to keep the pH reasonable by adding compost, and organic type fertilizers. -Rotate your tomato beds every year, a build-up of harmful organisms can be bad for next years crop of tomatoes. (wont get scientific, google can help ya with that.)...See More2010 Official Rose List Supplement, February 2011

Comments (1)Hi lazy, I had luck with C, so I'll answer that one and defer to the more experienced on the other two. I have been compiling a list of determinates for your A request. I'm probably going to experiment in a plot that fits 40 plants. Narrowing types to 20 (2 of each) gives me a headache. We share the same mindset on the concentrated early set though. I'd like to clear out that garden by the 4th of July next year. I had good results with cherries. Sungold and Super Sweet 100s as usual suspects. Both have a reputation for cracking. I saw little, maybe 1 in 50? I may pick earlier than most. Azruss in Tucson had good results with Gardener's Delight and I'll put in one or two of those next year. Juliet gets good reviews for our conditions. Mine was a weak plant from the start and the fruit is plain in comparison. I keep going back to this, but Porter's Dark Red Cherry Hybrid is healthy and still setting fruit. The flavor suffers a little in high heat, but it's still good. Like some other crops, pick it early in the morning before the heat messes with it. Rather than being a sweet sugary marble like the others it has a nice bigger tomato taste. It is a bit larger too. 4 Husky Red Cherries acted like determinates, which is okay for us. They're small plants, 3 feet high, very compact and stout, and they covered with dozens of nice size delicious cherries that some (mom and sis) felt were the best I grew. They stood up to the sun, delivered heavily for a month+ and perished. I could have cared for them better. It came the closest to ripening clusters evenly per your request. Starting as early as you said, these could be staggered every two weeks for about six weeks into mid march and give you a strong steady supply through mid July, I think. I'm also thinking they have what it takes for a fall crop. The type I am trying currently is not up to this heat, but that husky bull of a cherry plant may do much better. It was my earliest cherry. Another project for next year. As the cherries go, I feel emboldened to try just about anything. I have seed for all above but the Husky and Sungold plus Black Cherry, Chocolate Cherry, Large Red Cherry, Orange Cherry, Green Grape, Red Grape, and Black Plum. I'm looking for more varieties and want great big plants. I'm happy to send you a few seeds if any interest you. I'd like to spread them around hard core desert conditions like ours and see other results....See MoreShade AND Sun in Phoenix
Comments (3)I'm assuming you live in Phoenix... I used to look at the north side of houses as "shade" because, well, it is. But I was over thinking it. I finally noticed lots of homes in my neighborhood have front yards facing north and they have all kinds of plants not considered shade plants. Since then I've rethought this shade thing. There is a difference in amount of shade. A house blocks direct sun, but there is still reflected light. Where as in a dense forest there's heavier shade. I would say the north side of a house in Phoenix is light shade. For a one story house that only extends maybe 6-8' from the house and then you're in full sun. From what I see in my neighborhood, plants that take full sun do fine on the north side of homes. If anything I think the small level of shade increases the kinds of plants that would not just live but do better. So my list would be any plant you can find in any local nursery will do fine. Food crops are a little different. Less sun is less growth, less produce. They still grow. Almost any place in the world people will say vegetables don't grow in shade. And they're right, not just because of light but also reduced soil temp. Phoenix is a different planet. Here shade is likely to extend your growing season. You may get less growth but for a longer period before the heat and low humidity stop growth. We are always right on the edge of a plant doing well or dying. Moving a plant 12" can make a huge difference. So imo it's not really possible to say for sure plant X will live or die in a spot until you try it. But I would not be afraid to try any plant on the north side of a house. In fact, "shade" plants like ferns, impatiens, etc., are likely to disappoint you. The list of plants that don't do well in light shade is shorter. Bermuda grass is the only thing on my list and it would still grow, just not as well as other turf grasses. I'd still put Bermuda in the mix and let the turf decide for itself where the line of best growth is (and it moves throughout the year)....See MoreElmer J Fudd
