First attempt at over wintering....

From Canada, but its very mild here and we get maybe 1-2 weeks of frost, if any per year. So I thought I'd try to over winter some Habs, Jalaps, and Bells that did REALLY well. Only kept the extraordinary specimens. Hacked them all to pieces about 2 weeks ago. New sprouts already starting in the axils...its too warm here! Be interesting to see if these guys out produce the new seedlings from this coming season:

I don't prune any of mine back, in fact this is what I took from one habanero plant 30 minutes ago and I also posted it in another thread.

. Some of my plants are several years old.

If you have the room and can keep them warm enough and they get enough light, they will continue to produce all winter. But for some up north that overwinter in the house, it is pretty tough to not prune them back. The will still produce later that winter, even after being pruned back if you let them go.

You might want to keep an eye on that grasshopper. On some of my whipshoots, the hoppers have eaten most of the emerging leaves (while they're still rolled up). They like the tender stuff I guess.

I have a house also and had to protect it with a "hail wire" cover to prevent birds from eating the bees. In GA you are probably okay leaving it on the porch through the winter. In colder areas, it is often advisable to move it to an unheated shed for the winter.

Looking good Karen! I've done several of the ones you've done and they grew well. I did foxglove, delphinium, blackberry lily, columbine, Echinacea. Marigolds did well to but I didn't sow them til mid March, the petunias I tried fizzled, think that was my fault because I moved them to my greenhouse and it got to hot. My next seed order will be coming soon and there will be more to do. Right now I only have 3 flats. Sounds like you're hooked. BTW, I've never done larkspur but have read that other people have and it works for them. I never start w/s til after Christmas. Marg

Yes...You did good! I wanted to ask a question. I noticed none of you guys have ever mentioned planting Beefsteaks. Why is this? Is Beefsteak an over hyped 'pop' tomato? While there is a variety of tomato named Beefsteak, there are numerous other beefsteak tomatoes. Beefsteak is a term used to describe the shape of a tomato, just as a lot of little tomatoes varieties are called cherry tomatoes. Though you may not read of many folks growing Beefsteaks, they are indeed growing beefsteak shaped tomatoes. Beefsteak Tomato at Wikipedia If you scan through the list of tomatoes Here you will see that there are many with beefsteak in the description. You will likely recognize some that have been mentioned here as being grown. With maybe 10,000 varieties of tomatoes, many of us have at some time or another grown the named variety Beefsteak, but have since moved on to trying so many more of the 10,000 varieties available. Are there other kinds I should try next year? Undoubtedly there are...just keep reading and you will likely read of numerous ones you might like to try. Then you can mosey over to the Seed Exchange, (or the Exchange page here at this forum) make a post there, and trade off some of your Commercially bought Beefsteak for some other varieties. No, these guys were dying back on their own. Leaves were falling, branches were turning brown. I live in a warm part of Canada, but still. 3C at night won't support a pepper plant. As esox said, I pretty much had to prune.

Hope they come back for you next season! I sometimes seed in the late summer, keep the plants indoors all winter and then when spring gets here, they are already nice size and ready to go quickly.

Keep an eye on the new growth for aphids, I turned my back for one second and they exloded!

Aphids: Always an issue with bringing pepper plants inside for the winter.

Your timing is brutal esox....I found a bunch of little white bugs on my habanero plant. Daily spraying will hopefully deal with it. First time of the three winters ive done this that it has bit me

Insecticidal soap works great. It is natural and non-toxic. You have to treat it many times over a long period though in order to kill off all life cycles of the little bastards.

Yeah, the axils already have new shoots starting. I'll definitely watch for the aphids. With the heat and supplemental lighting in the greenhouse, I'm growing more than ever now. But for sure more susceptible to pests as well.
