flexible, unbreakable wine glasses

I am looking at the flexible, unbreakable wine glasses as part of a gift for my brother who spends a lot of time on his boat. It seems most are made of silicone -- and some have pretty high ratings. Have you used them? They seem awkward to me ... and yet perfect for entertaining on a boat.

Are there other options? I am not a fan of the plastic wine glasses because they scratch so easily and then look like junk.

Although I like my wine in glass (or a red solo cup, depending on the event) Tervis makes a wine glass that isn't too awful.

Tervis wine glass

we first used these when out on a friend's sailboat a couple weeks ago, it's nice keeping the white at a cool temp.

My biggest complaint with tervis is the thickness of the lip-- but I guess that's the trade off for the insulating and unbreakable features.

When one sets out to build a custom home they should be limited solely to their dreams and budget constraints. If they want a wine cellar so be it, and if the neighbor wants a conference room to host AA meetings that is thier choice. I once did the plumbing in a house that had four bedrooms but 6 full baths and three 1/2 baths and only two people live in the house. Personally i thought it was a bit too much, but far be it from me to tell the next man or woman how to build their dreamhouse. What truely amazes me is the number of people who are designing their dream house, then post on the forum asking the opinions of others as to whether they should have a certain feature or not? The whole idea of a custom home is to create an enviroment that befits your personal lifestyle and interests. In my personal opinion if a guest drops by and don't like your choices they have the option of going back to their little corner of the world where things are done their way. If a wine cellar complete with a tasting bar befits your social habits then by all means that is what you should have, just don't forget an adequate storage facility for the cheese to be served with the wine.

Hi there, This is my first time posting in the bathroom forum (been hanging out in the appliance section), so I'm glad people have the same concerns I do about cleaning the shower! Apologies in advance if this is a bit tangental, but I've been looking at various shower surfaces for our new bathroom remodels. I like the look of tile/stone but absolutely abhor the idea of dealing with the grout and caulking -- it just seems like an inevitable problem. Those acrylic inserts appear to resolve this issue, but they're just so cheap feeling I don't think I can buy into it. Having recently visited a home show, I think I found a really interesting compromise called stonecraft (not sure if that's just the company brand name or the actual product name -- linked below). It's a plastic/cement mixture that they paint in two layers. The first layer goes on solid. Then they 'tape' the tile pattern you want, then apply the second coat (different colour). When the tape's removed, the first layer appears as the grout lines. I first looked at this for my patio deck, but the more I read into it, the more I liked it for other parts of the house -- including the shower (they even suggest it). My contractor worked on another house that used this outside and it really feels like a stone material. As it's painted on, it should be seamless (walls, floor, ceiling)and, therefore, a breeze to clean! Kind of hoping someone's used this and can share their experience, because it seems like a silver bullet. As for the doors itself, I'm wondering if anyone knows how long a shower stall would need to be to go 'doorless' without getting significant splashing out of water. Any good ideas for wine corks?

If I was doing a ceiling, I would get some thin plywood sheets, glue to corks to them, then screw them to the ceiling, rather than trying to stick corks up there one by one like Michelangelo doing a cork version of the Sistine Chapel. It sounds cool though! I've cut them in half using a bandsaw. Clamp a piece of PVC pipe just bigger than the corks, to the saw table, with the blade centered on the outlet of the pipe. Shove corks into it and halves come out the other end.

The 3M coatings do have a learning curve the first time you use them. The coatings are not cheap , last I checked price it was about the same as adding tempereed glass. Polycarbonate and acrylic are the two types of clear plastic used in place of glass.Polycarbonate is the type you would wznt since it almost unbreakable, though it does scratch easier and cost a bit more. I would just use tempered glass that comes with the doors and use the money saved to repair the glass if it does break. The thermal properties of the door would be lost using Polycarbonate and prone to scratches.I think the tempered glass would hold up your needs, but if you are getting Darth Vader like flying debris you would need polycarbonate or would have to look into something that would go in front of window to protect it from netting to shutters.

Yesterday I was at BB&B and looked at the Tervis wine glasses for DS who has habit of breaking stemware. The website has them on clearance.

These are along the lines of what I am looking at.. I like the stemless style (I use them myself for *everything*) and I like that they don't take up too much space.

I think I would rather have a non flexible polycarb type of glass and replace periodically if they got too scratched... but, I haven't ever had the flexible type, so maybe if I tried them I would like them more than I think I would...!

I've seen pictures of the silicone, but have not had one in hand. We did try the silicone egg poachers, so that's about what I would expect. I would wonder if the motion on a boat would make them impossible to set down without worry of them rolling or spilling. Do any of the reviews talk about their stability?

When I saw them, I thought "for the backpacker who has everything" -- everything you could afford, anyway. Might be good for a boat or RV -- and they could multi task as egg poachers. LOL

If you still need another option, I saw these Govino reusable glasses last night. And bought a set. They are a polymer and recyclable. There is a depression for your thumb. The instructions say to hand wash and discard when they lose luster, but for $14.95 for 4 12-oz, I thought it was a good deal. There was also a smaller size

Outside, I saw those on amazon and thought the thumb depression was great for on the boat! I think I will go with those! Thanks so much for sharing the photo!

One question-- maybe dumb lol. Is the thumb indentation ok to use with your left and as well as right? My bro is left handed.

Will be fine for either hand. My DD is a lefty also, so I thought about her too. It's just an oval shape. Nicely done.

I got the Govino as a gift. They are cool looking, but unfortunately they start looking ratty in a short period of time.

Hate to hear that but thanks. I mainly got them for the pool at our condo since rules say no glass and I occasionally like to take a glass of wine. Is it water spots?

Ive read a lot of reviews and i've decided to stick with the govino for a few reasons.. 1. he'll be using them on an ocean boat (vs still water) so I like the extra grip of the thumb hold.

2. The biggest complaints I read were that they are very thin and feel like a solo cup.. and that they melt in a dishwasher. Since these will be used ON a boat, I don't think either is a big issue.

3. The price is low enough that if they are a bust, so be it

4. They are adaptable for both wine and cocktails.. in fact, I use my glass ones for water, iced tea, etc.

Even the much higher priced shatterproof glasses have reviewers complaining about scratches, clouding, how they feel on the mouth.. but many of them were using them in the house.. or in the backyard.. where glass is an option. I think these will be fine for poolside and/or on a boat.

I nixed the silicone as soon as I saw a reviewer mention a slight silicone smell/taste.
