sick agaves
Comments (6)Joel, up until Friday there was absulutely nothing (apparently) wrong with any of my agaves. I have many of all varieties and every single one is now afflicted with this problem, as are others in our village. Wherever they are, they have this same problem and it has happened over three days. Mine were very healthy and looked that way until Friday. They were all nice and dark green and thriving in different soils. This one pictured is in very rocky un-conditioned soil. Others are in beautiful organic soil, and some in a sandy mix. I just put them anywhere and they thrive. Other people have them in pots and still have the problem. It's just happened suddenly all at the same time and no one knows why....See MorePlease Help with Agave problem
Comments (12)Thank you for your help. I moved the agave out onto my back screened in porch and out of direct sunlight. The spots actually turned black like a bruise, but now appear to be healing and actually turning green again. But this is so strange since agave's are supposed to be full sun. I have some babies that I had planned to put in an outside planter and it gets full afternoon sun (with no morning sun). If I gradually acclimate it and the other succulents I had planned to put in that planter, do you think they will be OK? Do you think the glass window had anything to do with the sunburn?...See MoreMy agave has the measles!
Comments (6)Well, I talked with my neighbor who happens to be a PhD botanist. He told me to not throw out the kid just because he has acne. So it's not measles! He pretty much told me to go get my sharp knife and mix up the copper spray. I'll also get my cinnamon and long sleeved shirt! So that's the plan for now. Let's hope he is right - and he usually is. He said all the rain we had last month and our still high humidity has made things ripe for fungal infestations. And in the daylight, we could see that the "slime" is actually oozing from the plant wounds....See MoreAgave propagation by leaves
Comments (9)I was going to start a thread on a similar situation. I have an agave that has rotted from the bottom up. Looks like the rot has stopped and all is dry now and it looks good (well, sort of OK) from the top. This is a medium sized agave and a bit of hard dead stuff I can't remove around the "soil line". I have 2 of these guys. I'm thinking just stick 'em in the potting mix and see what happens. Still I know this is different than starting from a leaf!!...See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
