Comments (1)There is no Mexican lime that has orange flesh. There are only 2 derivatives, the one with thorns, and the thornless. The thornless is likely a "sport" of the first. The flesh of Mexican lime does turn a little bit yellow, a sort of yellow green with yellow skin as it ripens. Perhaps what you are thinking of is the Rangpur which has long been called a lime but which does not taste like a lime, is not a lime and should not be called a lime. Here is a page about Rangpur. http://www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/rangpur.html There is confusion about the name because of what it is called in other parts of the world and because it is highly acid and sour, like a lime. Being sour and being generally a citrus, are the only things it has in common with a lime. Well, ok they both have small flowers too. These sorts of confusion about names are not uncommon. For instance both lemon and lime are called lemon in Mexico. Rangpur "lime" is really more like a mandarin and is only green before it is ripe. It turns orange when ripe and the flesh is orange. It is not especially good for much and is more of a novelty that anything although it can be used in cooking, where you might also use lemon or lime, for sour and acid taste. Here is another site with LOTS of variety information. http://www.ccpp.ucr.edu/variety/limes.html...See Moresystemic drench for Mexican Lime Tree
Comments (11)Umm. The Bayer Tree and Shrub drench works great on Citrus. It is a weak version of Admire Pro, which I spent $300 on wholesale for a small jug. I get the same main ingredient in my pet's Advantage! I used the general purpose BTS drench on many potted Citrus and it stopped leafminers for a good year. This product (Imidacloprid) is used on all Citrus sold in Florida, and nearly all veggies. Citrus have tags on them indicating the date of treatment. It helps protect against Citrus Greening, and promotes vigorous growth. The general pupose version is not labeled for Citrus. So, Bayer will hem and haw about using it, and will advise against it. Getting labels for each type of plant costs Bayer big $$$$. So they go after the approvals for commercial products first. Use common sense. We are already eating this stuff in our lettuces, peppers, spinach, and other plants that we eat the leaves of.. The Imidacloprid is taken up well in leaves, but poorly in flowers and fruit. So, in my opinion, it is okay on my 50 Citrus trees. Without it, my trees are disfigured by leafminers to the point that I was considering removing the trees. It is safe for Apples, Plums, ect, which I also grow, so I tried it on my worst Citrus. They are thriving. My trees defoliate terribly when I use ultrafine oils on them, as directed. I won't use it again except on winter-dormant trees (not Citrus). I used the measuring directions on the bottle of Bayer Tree?shrub for my potted Citrus. Please do your own research. We all have to do what works best for us. With the Admire Pro, my Citrus are beautiful and healthy, and we have a gazzilion bees to work the blooms. Comments (3)Starless, I'm not sure when planting season in AZ starts/ends...Perhaps you can talk to neighbors, ask the last planting date of the year. If you decide to leave your lime in a pot, since it's in a 5 gallon, why repot at all? I'd simply leave in the container it's in, then when appropriate planting time comes, set in the ground. Since it can drop to 25 degrees in Dec, it may be best to wait till spring. This will give your lime tree time to adjust. Perhaps someone living in AZ can be of further help.
