What colors to avoid in North facing rooms?
Comments (37)But, what are some examples of "clear" neutral colors that might also have some depth? I need serious help on this, PLEASE!!! Our LR is the one I need to choose a paint color for very soon - before year end. I had chosen Blonde, but then I saw yellow might not go well with the beige and brown brick fireplace. Not sure Blonde is considered clear or muddy. I have blue and taupe furniture, a medium brown wood tone floor (no gold or red) and a red and blue darkish rug. We cannot afford new furniture and the floor was just stained and finished. Came out a bit darker than I wanted. Since I haven't picked up the rug yet I might be able to switch it out for something lighter in color. So, the rug and the walls are the only things I can change to brighten things up. I'm going SW Creamy for all my trim as I think almost anything goes with it. Chose Diverse Beige for the bedrooms. Would that one turn "muddy" in a northern room?...See MoreNorth Facing Great Room & Dining Room paint help
Comments (6)As others have pointed out a north-facing room will have no direct sunlight and little natural light 365 days a year. The good thing about north light, as any architect or artist will tell you, is that the lighting level and color will tend to be the same throughout much of the day, i.e., you will never have hot spots, glare and significantly different lighting levels throughout the day. If it was my house I'd find a cream, white or other light value color to enhance and amplify the overall light level level. Creams and whites come in a wide range of hue and temperature biases. I always recommend that consumers buy several of the small sample containers and do "brush ons" on several surfaces which are parallel and perpendicular to one another and to the windows, since colors always look different depending on where they are located. They also look different depending on whether the day is sunny or overcast. Good luck with your project!...See MoreHelp picking a basement paint color for a north facing low light room
Comments (5)My experience is that dark gloomy areas need a strong saturated color. You have to have the lights on when you use this room and artificial light murders lights and whites, so why not do a deeper color? I would paint everything, trim, walls one color so the room is not broken up by distracting trim. Relying on my monitor to make this S.W. suggestion, because this shade of green looks like a good backdrop for you darker sofas and rug. Don’t you rely on my monitor, though…the green/blue in the rug....See MoreHelp! Need to pick paint colors for north facing bedrooms.
Comments (12)For my daughter’s room (which faces north east) we plan on painting it BM slip. The room across the hall (facing south west, I suppose), I wanted to do in BM Beach Glass. I painted a sample board. It’s a beautiful color, just worried it will be too dark in this room. Am also thinking about BM Silken Pine or BM Healing Aloe. The room next to my daughter’s room (further north than east) will be my son’s room. Sapele bunk bed, navy sheets. Am thinking BM edgecomb gray (LRV 63) or gray owl (LRV 67), though I’ve read that gray owl can be a minty green in certain lighting. The problem is little lighting as there is only one window. The hallway will be BM Wickham Gray. This is the one color that will stay as is because it works with the great room and the main foyer. Any thoughts / suggestions?...See MoreUser
