Meyer Lemon Tree: Overwinter Indoors or Out in zone 6b?

I live in NC, zone 6b. I have a 3 year old Meyer lemon tree and a 2 year old calamondin tree. I usually bring these trees indoors in the winter, where I keep them in a cool room and struggle to keep them happy (especially the more finicky Meyer lemon). Someone at at local garden center suggested that I keep them outside, bringing them into the garage when the temperature is going to get below 32, and then bringing them back outdoors when the weather will be warmer than that. Which scenario is likely to keep the plants happier: Bringing them inside where there will be limited sunlight and the temperatures will be in the 60-65 degree range, or keeping them outdoors during most days, and bringing them into the garage on colder days/night? Thanks for any advice here!
