When Can I Transplant Baby Plants in Jiffy Pots?
Comments (3)The Jiffy Pots are designed to be planted in the growing medium. This way there is no damage to the roots when you transplant your plants. I do not think that there are any advantages to transplanting early. If the weather is good enough to keep your plants outside you can transplant your plants, Jiffy Pot and all....See Morewhen to separating babies from leaf
Comments (3)Dustin - I wait until the plantlet has 4 leaves. You use this rule with the minis - so then you do not need to guess what size it should grow to. Sometimes there are 2-3 big babies and the rest is still small. If you want to save more plantlets - chip off and plant the big ones and plant a momma-leaf with small babies back to the pot. How fast you get the babies - depends on the time of the year and variety. If you start feeding the leaf with babies with a weak solution of the fish emulsion - they will grow faster. Comments (2)Personally, I seperate the babies as soon as I can get ahold of them and they have enough 'root' to stick into soil. The sooner you pluck them from the momma leaf, though, the closer you have to watch them until they develop actual "roots." So far, I haven't lost any babies this way, but I've only been raising violets for about seven months or so-- so take my advice with a grain of salt....See Morewhen should I plant my muhly grass babies?
Comments (7)That makes sense. Its probably Love Grass because of the consistency in seedlings. It'd be hard to imagine that many seedlings of one type all being weed seeds that got in the packs. By the way, Purple Love Grass reseeds like crazy. If you plant them out, and I definitely would this year after letting them harden off a couple weeks starting in shade, you will laugh to remember babying them like that once you see how many volunteers you end up with the following year. I've done that before too. Karley Rose is a hybrid pennisetum with sterile seeds. Only the species comes true from seed and in some places its considered invasive. Santa Rosa Gardens is a great place to order from. I'm getting ready to place an order on some sale grasses before the fall prices set in. They have a fall sale later on and I've had 100% success planting at that time, its the best time in Oklahoma for that. If you are wanting pink, P. Karley Rose grows REAL REAL fast, you'll have mature looking plants next year....See Moreflowerlilies77 (zone 6b - PA)
