Murraysmon, we had a tailless squirrel at our feeder years ago. What happened was that he somehow got his tail caught under the hook type hanger of a feeder that was hung over a limb on the tree. When dh went out to try to free him, the panicked squirrel jumped free leaving 3/4 of his tail behind. He apparently healed well and frequented the feeders for another couple years.

I have no idea what happened to my squirrel's tail. I have seen other squirrels with shortened tails and I assume a hawk maybe tried to catch them. Animals are amazing.

I am really enjoying all of the squirrel pictures. We have a lot of them, have named some, and of course we feed them. Now if they would just stay out of our attic and go live elsewhere, I'd be happy.

Wow - if the squirrels around here were black I don't think I'd dislike them so much.

When I was in college at Ohio State ther was an albino squirrel that would run around campus. I always joked that it was a lab rat that escaped and glued fur onto its rat tail so it could look cute and blend in.

Black squirrels are as common here as the tan ones. Seymour was black.

We now have squirrels in our yard. For years there were none, then a pair of eastern fox varmints moved into the neighbor's pine within the past two months. Introduced into the state, they have proceeded to spread across the county until they have finally reached our real estate. Oh joy!

At our old house we had the native ground squirrels. The tunnels they dug were loads of fun to deal with! The eastern tree squirrels are more photogenic, but I haven't bothered to take any shots of (or at) them yet. So this is one of the native ground rats from our previous home, preparing to carry off a large amount of bird seed, from the looks of things.

Some unknown person purchased this for me and had it delivered to my porch...what a blessing!

A village near here has had a number of albino squirrels for years.

I don't know whether all of the squirrels in that town are albinos.

I HATE squirrels! I'm 65 and didn't hate them until we moved into this house 3 years ago. They keep tearing up our pool screen and costing us $$$$$ for repairs. Do y'all know they can carry Bubonic Plague? They are rodents. . .cute rats with bushy tails!

Olney advertises it is the home of the white squirrels. There are several around, but this one is of the variety found in local woods.

Did you know that squirrels can negotiate the side of a vertical brick wall? They can if the brick facing has sufficient detail as this building did. These bricks have fine vertical grooves on their faces. This was just barely enough to allow this squirrel to gingerly work his way across the wall. He did not climb very high staying within a comfortable dropping distance to the ground. He soon tired of the "rock climb" and jumped down.

Interesting...and always fun to learn something new about such varmints lives. Have never seen one here in our town...wonder why. We have had them every where else that we lived....curious.

I'm not too surprised to see the squirrel on a wall. I was surprised to see a praying mantis climbing slowly and carefully across the glass of a window. I was also surprised to see "Mr. Bitey" climbing a tree in our yard.

Good ole "Mr. Bitey" always trying to get attention.
