Heat Pump Selection Help please
Comments (19)Tigerdunes, I received a reply to my heat strip question from the Lennox dealer. He states: "I would have no idea how to size them for your home without knowing the size breaker and wire you have running to the unit. Most 2 ton units have 7,t kw. What size do you currently have? It should really make no difference since you will not use the heat except for defrost and then you would want at least 7.5 kw for the defrost cycle. Auxiliary heat almost never get used in a condo unless you are foolishly setting back. Available in 3,5, 7.5 and 10kw for 2.0 ton air handlers. The small 3.0 heaters are not staged, normally 50% stage one and 50% stage 2 until you get to 10KW. After that they have 3 stages. You should not even care about staging electric with a heat pump since that if what you heat with not electric. Do you use emergency heat? Why do you if you do?" This dealer seems willing/eager to make a deal, but I am still concerned about the pricing. As a general question...I have to date received 4-5 quotes, and they are all very high, for seemingly entry level systems. For example, I received a quote on a Goodman SSZ140241A with AEPF313716A for $7,200 from one dealer. I dont understand why this is. Is there something about me that says "rip me off" or is it that its slow this time of year and they are trying to boost margins to make up for the slowness. Or is it that its 15deg. outside and they are charging a premium for working in the cold? -a...See MoreHelp select an Heat pump and Fan unit
Comments (9)md I would not have the AmStd Heritage 16. This HP has been problematic, has poor performance/eff numbers, and does not qualify for the Fed Govt Tax Credit. Now to the Carrier Performance 15 3258844 Active Systems PERFORMANCE 15 PURON HP CARRIER AIR CONDITIONING 25HPA542A31 FV4BNF005 42000 12.50 15.50 41000 8.50 25000 You should request the "H" mdl Performance 15 over the "A" mdl you have been quoted. It has much better heating eff and EER. see below for comparison. 3257967 Active Systems PERFORMANCE 15 PURON HP CARRIER AIR CONDITIONING 25HPA542H31 FV4BN(B,F)005 42000 13.00 15.50 42000 9.00 26600 both Carriers qualify for the tax credit. The Bryant quote is their Preferred 15 HP condenser which for all basic purposes is the same as Carrier's Performance 15. (if you didn't know Bryant and Carrier are sister companies same as Trane and AmStd). The main reason the Bryant is more expensive is because of the Evolution air handler and Evolution thermostat. Nice but depending on budget not absolutely necessary. The Performance 15 "H" mdl configuration would be my choice with a Carrier thermidistat. That dealer has quoted the "T" tin plated coil var speed air handler which is correct. I would have the 15 KW backup heat strip staged with perhaps two 7.5 KW strips. I assume the prices quoted do not include the tax credit-correct? Let me know if you have any questions. IMO Good Luck!...See MoreTrane Heat Pump System Selection
Comments (2)dht Dealer 1 is offering an older A1 version of the XR14. The configuration below offers the best performance numbers for the XR14,C1 version which you want. 1382135 Active OEM XR14 WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWR4024C1 4TEE3F39A1 24000 13.00 15.00 24000 9.00 12500 1382247 Active OEM XR14 WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWR4024C1 4TEE3F31B1 24600 13.00 15.00 24000 8.60 13900 Dealer 2-I would not have the XR13 model. This model is light in heating BTUs. Dealer 3-The XL15i is overall the best of the three choices and obviously the most expensive. 1382158 Active OEM XL15I WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWX5024A1 4TEE3F39A1 25000 13.00 16.00 24000 9.00 13800 1383391 Active OEM XL15I WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWX5024A1 4TEE3F31B1 25200 13.00 15.25 24000 8.60 13900 You want a thermostat that controls the blower speed for best dehumdification in cooling. My selection would be the Honeywell Vision Pro IAQ or perhaps the new Trane 900 series. Do not accept anything else. I believe the XL15i offers a rebate-ask the dealer. And because you are changing refrigerants, you should insist on a new and properly sized lineset. Do you mind stating area of country you live? I assume you are certain a 2 ton is correct size. What are you doing about air quality-you have a central return? IMO numbers provided from the CEE HVAC directory...See MoreAdvice selecting between a 2 stage or modulating furnace w/ heat pump
Comments (20)Tigerdunes, you are correct in most aspects, but the selling back excess is the sticky point right now. The selling of electricity to the utility from renewable power sources by individual customers is governed by local PUCs. In some places, you get nothing or virtually nothing for excess. Furthermore, in places you lose any excess at the end of the month, it does not roll over. Others, maybe you can't roll over at the end of the year. Some net metering agreements require the utility to pay the customer if there is a chronic overproduction. In some of those cases, you only get paid when you disconnect from the utility. (When you move or die.) That is like a no interest bank account/retirement fund. The agreement is so bad in some areas that with the price of panels going so low, homeowners are better off buying batteries. That is something not dreamed of as economic not long ago. Installing big water heaters or freezing ice and using it to cool the home at time of high demand are alternatives. Definitely consider that the lifetime equipment costs of running a furnace vs, a heat pump when doing calculations to determine cost and environmental impact. I don't know if the ability to recover retail cost of excess power can tip the balance to make a heat pump favorable or not, but it might....See Moreweedmeister
